According to the final results, 55.3% voted against independence as compared to 44.7% who wanted Scotland to break the 300-year-old union with England, AFP reported.
"Just as the people of Scotland will have more power over their affairs, so it follows that the people of England, Wales and Northern Ireland must have a bigger say over theirs," remarked Cameron in his speech during a news conference in London.
"It is absolutely right that the new and fair settled Scotland should be accompanied by a new and fair settlement that applies to all parts of our UK," Cameron stated.
"We have heard the voice of Scotland and now the millions of voices of England must also be heard," he added.
"So just as Scotland will vote separately in the Scottish parliament on their issues of tax spending and welfare, so too England as well as Wales and Northern Ireland should be able to vote on these issues," the British PM stated, adding that this must take place in tandem with and at the same pace as the settlement for Scotland.
'Will of Scottish people heard'
Referring to the referendum, Cameron said that the settled will of the Scottish people has been heard, adding that Scotland voted for a stronger Scottish Parliament backed by the strength and security of the UK.
"I want to congratulate the No campaign for that, for showing people that our nations really are better together," he added.
He also paid tribute to the Yes Scotland.
"We now have a chance, a great opportunity to change the way the British people are governed and change it for the better," he added.
"Political leaders on all sides of the debate now bear a heavy responsibility to come together and work constructively to advance the interests of people in Scotland as well as those in England, Wales and Northern Ireland for each and every citizen for our UK," Cameron said, requesting all political leaders to work together.
Addressing the skepticism of those in Scotland regarding constitutional promises that were made, the British Prime Minister assured them that this government has delivered on devolution and will do so again in the next Parliament.
Speaking about what the Scottish referendum represented, Cameron said that it has stirred strong passions, electrified politics in Scotland and caught the imagination of people across the whole of the UK.
"It will be remembered as a powerful demonstration of the strength and vitality of our ancient democracy," he added, further stating that record numbers were registered to vote and record numbers cast their votes.
During his speech, he appreciated the fact that vital issues such as this could be settled at the ballot box peacefully and calmly.
"Now we must look forward and turn this into the moment when everyone, whichever way they voted, comes together to built that better brighter future for our entire UK," he said.

V@Syed Jalal Kashmiri: "Kashmir has nothing in common with India. Kashmiris are still seen as Pakistanis by the majority of Indians," Bat kuch jami nahi. Tell me what have you found that is not common. India is a vast multi culture, multi language and multi religion country. If from Kerala to Bengal to Mizoram, Ngaland, Arunachal is part of India what discovery you have made? Who sees Kashmiris as Pakistani except you. For your information there is nothing common in Kashmir and Pakistan and Kashmir has a very SPECIAL rich, unique and integral culture like any other state of India.
@Syed Jalal Kashmiri:
"Kashmir has nothing in common with India."
Kashmir has been Hindu land for over 5000 years and therefore has everything "in common" with India.
"Kashmiris are still seen as Pakistanis by the majority of Indians, so might as well make it official and give us our due rights"
You've already got your rights to move to Pakistan, a country that was created for people who didn't want to live with Hindus. No one is stopping you from moving. Oh, wait. The Pakistanis may not want to let you in without land in hand?
@WB: "This comparison is being made by only 180 million failed Pakistanis. No Indian made the comparison" How on Earth you concluded that? Take my advice. Have a look at the world other than your media. Your common sense will tell you much more about the reality. For me, I feel proud in kind a way that Indians come on our websites and compare us with them. Apples and Oranges for people with some brains! A nation 8 times bigger in every possible resources, that had the head start in the form of infrastructure literacy and economy at thr time of independence is still stuck with comparing with what we have achieved in the past 60 years. Remarkable :)
Kashmir has nothing in common with India. Kashmiris are still seen as Pakistanis by the majority of Indians, so might as well make it official and give us our due rights. Otherwise India will lose more than Kashmir in any future war with Pakistan. Already, India is crumbling.
I have no doubts on transparency of referendum as there is no PML-N.
Congratulations to "No" voters on saving the Union.
@Shuaib Bhat: Dear Bhat Sahib, I have been around there and I know how much Pakistani they call themselves. The poor have been pushed out to Punjab to earn their bread and land is with big farmers mainly controlled by people of Punjab. Otherwise also from time immemorial the area of POK has hardly been the part of main land Kashmir the 'heaven on earth'.
@goldconsumer ... By 2040, India is destined to be superpower. Indian rupee will be the strongest in the world.. This prediction has come from the leading economic body of the world..
@goldconsumer:
"Yes. By the way India is also not England. Why compare India with a civilized nation?"
Very good point.
This comparison is being made by only 180 million failed Pakistanis. No Indian made the comparison.
This shows that we may not be civilized yet, but we are still smart.
Tell your compatriots to buy some brains and then some common sense.
@Vectra: So finally u admit...that Kashmir is not an internal matter of India...Good...now lets start from that shall we ?...
I suggest you read the UN resolution first ...Pakistan had to withdraw all its fighters and India had to keep the minimum number of troops...Neither party has fulfilled its responsibility
Good news! Now the UK economy will prosper even more and I look forward to seeing the GBP exchange reach Rs200 to £1, when I come for my next holidays ;)
@WB: Yes. By the way India is also not England. Why compare India with a civilized nation?
Why can’t sindh urban area allowed similar referendum for a separate province ? People of Urban Sindh marginalized by dominant rural politicians
@Vectra:
I think you have flip flopped a bit over here. There have been UN resolutions on Kashmir so Kashmir is not the internal matter of India. Pakistan has been a party to it and so are the Kashmiri people.... On the contrary, there are no UN resolutions on Baluchistan, so Baluchistan is an internal matter for Pakistan.....and secondly, one fails to understand how you are stating whole of Kashmir as an Indian territory while at the same time negating Baluchistan as a Pakistani territory.
@VINOD: There is no such restriction because the local populous doesn't give a hoot about whether we buy land there or not. Also they all call themselves Pakistani. There is no talk about plebsibate etc. I actually think Pakistan should hold a referendum there just to legitimize our stance in the world stage.
@pakistani: Pakistan will never allow referendum neither in Balochistan nor in Kashmir. If they do this how their strategic assets will survive ? and this is a lesson for J& K people also.
@Insider: Depends on your mentality. Pakistanis (would they be there by that label if Britain was still ruling? But never mind ) might have wanted to continue to "serve" their Masters. The rest would always opt for freedom.
@Insider:
"Let them be clear, Kashmir is not Scotland. "
You are absolutely 100% correct.
That is why India will never hold a referendum in Kashmir.
This is a beauty of real democracy, if it's happened in Pakistan political parties would claim rigging in referendum, good practice should always follow even if your enemies do. India claim largest democratic state, but action speak louder then words.
Such overwhelming comments about Kashmir have raised many question. Can the people of Sindh, Bilochistan, west Punjab, Kohat, Akasicin,Tibet,east Bengal,Kerala,Madras,Hongkong raise such demand. What will happen if all the states in USA ask the same.Are we not in a hurry to talk about Kashmir? We forget that while in J&K no outsider can settle or buy land in POK(Azad Kashmir) no such restrictions exist and as such what is the prospect of such referendum in POK. Let us think a little more seriously about Africa where colonial rule has created so many boarders amongst same ethnic groups and tribes.
First time I am a little confused about Tribune. Election in Scotland is one of the top news and covered with a nice photograph. Why no news of the visit of Chinese president to India, no pictures and total silence. Why no coverage of a great friend of Pakistan?
@Pan Mat: Same Might happen in Punjab and Assam and other district of india
Very wise decision. This is how highly developed, educated civilisation thinks for the future of their future generations. Wish there were such wise people in the Indian sub-continent when such a choice of partition of the country was offered to them.
Lots of Indians would now say that Kashmiris would also vote for No independence. Let them be clear, Kashmir is not Scotland. And believe you me, if Britain still ruled this sub-continent and referendum was carried out, 99% of Indians, Pakistanis and Bangalis would opt for NO INDEPENDENCE from Britain. So lets not brag about it, lets do it. Referendum in Kashmir.
Wonder if Scotland is a Muslim majority country what would be the outcome :-)
The referendum was rigged! Long march to 10 Downing street!
Why can't balochistan be allowed similar referendum? It's going to be heavily "No" as well, and the militants or anyone who thinks Balochistan can separate will be shush for the longest time. Kashmir should also hold referendum.
The mob will burn few buses in Karachi after hearing results of Scotland referendum to show solidarity with Kashmiris ;-)
Really who need enemies with well wishers like these!
