KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has announced that it will submit two separate resolutions in the upcoming Sindh Assembly session: one against the surge in sectarian killings in Karachi and the other for the conduction of local bodies elections in the province.

Speaking to the media after the parliamentary party meeting in the Sindh Assembly on Monday, the leaders termed the spate of targeted killing a 'conspiracy' against Karachi.

The meeting, which was chaired by Syed Sardar Ahmed, discussed the killings of Shia and Sunni leaders and demanded the government to take immediate steps to control the situation.

MQM is a coalition partner of the Pakistan Peoples Party in the Sindh government. MPA Abdul Haseeb, who is also advisor to the chief minister on Auqaf, expressed his party's concern over a number of issues. "It has been one year since the start of the targeted operation but it has not yielded any results," he said. "Instead of taking action against criminals, the police and Rangers are victimising innocent citizens."

Khawaja Izharul Hassan said that they would move a resolution for the local government elections in the upcoming session.

"The country would not have faced such losses due to the floods if the local government system had been functional," he said, adding that the situation can easily be resolved by engaging people and mobilising resources at the grass roots level.

Hassan revealed that the meeting also reviewed the development schemes they have submitted to the planning and development department for their respective constituencies.

"Some lawmakers have not yet received the funds even after getting their schemes approved by the higher authorities," he remarked.

Hassan warned that they will no longer tolerate the killings of innocent people in the city and government should take steps to tackle the situation without further delay.
