Suo moto notice: SC hears case of labourers’ deaths

CJ asks why government is not paying compensation to the families of 18 diseased workers

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has summoned Attorney General for Pakistan and all advocate generals in the suo moto case on the death of 18 stone-crushing labourers in Gujranwala. Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, the former chief justice, had taken notice of their deaths on his last day in office on July 5. During the hearing on Wednesday, Additional Advocate General Punjab Razaq A Mirza told the three judge bench, headed by Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk that provincial government has taken action against 40 factories, which are violating the labourers rules. The CJ, however asked that why the government is not paying compensation to the families of 18 diseased workers as well as taking steps for avoiding death stone-crushing labourers.
