‘Hee dictionary sutthi aahe’

After 10 years of intense research and compilation, the Oxford English-Sindhi Dictionary was launched in Hyderabad.

HYDERABAD: After 10 years of intense research and compilation, the Oxford English-Sindhi Dictionary was launched in Hyderabad on Thursday.

The project was spearheaded by a team of Sindhi scholars and lexicographers who captured the idiomatic, colloquial, spoken and written character of the language, presenting the complete and modern depiction of Sindhi today.

University of Sindh’s former vice-chancellor Dr Ghulam Ali Alana, Sindhi Dictionaries, Oxford University Press, editor Badar Abro, former chairman of University of Sindh’s English department Prof Qalandar Shah Lakiari, Badar Abro, Nasir Aijaz and Dr Fahmida Hussain, the Sindh Language Authority chairperson, are some of the linguists who were involved in the compilation of the dictionary.

Based on the Oxford Corpus, the Oxford English-Sindhi Dictionary offers the Sindhi equivalent of almost 140,000 English words and expressions.

A distinctive feature of the dictionary is the use of illustrative references along with their Sindhi translations, also providing context. It also includes the pronunciation of English and Sindhi words.
