FAISALABAD:

An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Monday extended the physical remand of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) MPA Rana Shoaib Idrees for two days.

A case was registered against Idrees and nine others by Khurarianwala police under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) and Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) on July 18. The suspects were charged with attacking the police station, vandalising its furniture, assaulting policemen and freeing suspects in police custody. Police also charged 50 unidentified people in the case.

The police conducted several raids to arrest the MPA, but did not succeed. Idrees got protective bail from the Lahore High Court until August 28.

He was granted interim bail from the ATC on August 28. However, the court refused to confirm the bail on September 4. He was then taken into custody.

On September 5, police sought a seven-day physical remand of the MPA and his accomplices. The court granted police three days.

On Monday, police requested for seven more days’ remand.

The police said they needed more time for investigation.

The MPA’s lawyer opposed the request. “Idrees has been a vocal critic of police. During the remand, police only want to physically and mentally torture him,” the lawyer said.

Judge Ishtiaq Ahmad extended the remand for two more days and ordered police to complete the investigation within the time.
