LAHORE:

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Punjab president Manzoor Wattoo said on Saturday the government should revamp the civic infrastructure to minimise the damage caused by rain and floods.

“Instead of arranging photo ops, standing in rainwater, the chief minister should take pre-emptive measures to deal with monsoon downpours,” Wattoo said, condoling the death of six members of a family in a roof collapse in Chah Miran, Misri Shah.

PPP Punjab secretary general Tanvir Ashraf Kaira, Lahore president Samina Khalid Ghurki, Azizur Rehman Chan, Dewan Mohyuddin, Aurungzeb Burki, Abid Siddique and Rana Asher were also present.

“The chief minister repeats the platitudes during every rainy season with no follow-up action to mitigate the miseries of the poor,” Wattoo said.

He said instead of taking concrete steps the chief minister had been ordering action against Water and Sanitation Agency workers. “The micromanagement is endless,” he said.

Wattoo said the government should help repair the houses declared unfit for residential purposes.

He said some of the families of those who died in roof collapse incidents had claimed that Rescue-1122 had not come to their rescue.

“They say the loss of life could have been less had Rescue-1122 responded promptly,” the PPP leader said.
