PESHAWAR:

After PDMA—on directives of the meteorological (MET) office—issued rain and flash flood alerts, Minister for Irrigation Mahmood Khan asked his department to brace themselves for emergency measures.

In a press release on Thursday, Mahmood urged his staff to complete work on protective embankments.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Met Director Mushtaq Ali Shah said they had issued a rain warning for the next 24 hours. The downpour can result in flash floods in nullahs, he added. Shah said rain is predicted for Peshawar, Hazara, Malakand, Mardan and Kohat.

“As a precaution we have asked the PDMA and the irrigation department to be prepared for flash floods in nullahs,” said Shah. “There is no possibility of large-scale flooding in K-P.” MET officials said on condition of anonymity the greater risk is to those people who have encroached upon the nullahs to construct houses and properties.
