PESHAWAR:

Like other parts of the country, the legal fraternity of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) also went on strike on Monday to denounce the violence during the ongoing protests in Islamabad.

Three people have been killed and hundreds injured in the federal capital since clashes erupted between the police and protesters late Saturday night.

On the call of the Pakistan High Court Bar Council, lawyers of the Peshawar High Court and its circuit benches in other districts, including Swat, DI Khan and Abbottabad, boycotted proceedings. As a result, hundreds of cases were delayed.

“We strongly condemn the attack on Pakistan Television (PTV) and media persons, who are responsible for providing information to the entire country,” said PHCBA General Secretary Muhammad Ayaz. He added it was the prime responsibility of the government to provide security.

Ayaz told the media the government should now file a case against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan and PTI chief Tahirul Qadri for inciting protesters. He maintained terrorism sections should also be included in the FIR.

The legal fraternity would strongly oppose any undemocratic steps, the general secretary asserted. He pointed out that lawyers had rendered tremendous sacrifices for democracy and an independent judiciary. “There will soon be a convention in Peshawar and lawyers from K-P will attend it to decide their future course of action under the present circumstances,” said Ayaz.
