MANSEHRA:

A man was arrested by the police and civil authorities for selling fake tea in Peshawar, said the police on Thursday.

Mansehra Assistant Commissioner Dr Qasim, accompanied by District Food Controller Zamurad Khan and a contingent of police, raided a bungalow on Chinaar Road on Wednesday evening.

Authorities had received complaints about the manufacturing and marketing of fake and adulterated black tea, said the police.

The accused, Khursheed, a resident of Yakatoot, was taken into custody. Around 214 sacks of fake black tea weighing over 16,000kg were also seized. The raiding officers also confiscated weighing scales, packaging material, grinding machines and colouring agents from the culprit’s bungalow.

Khursheed confessed he had been supplying fake tea to local hotels and shops after adding black colour to powdered wood (burada) and split gram (chana) husk. He said he mixed some quantity of original tea into the fake one to mislead the buyers.

The accused had been running a fake-tea manufacturing unit for the last few years and the police had already raided and seized 212 sacks of fake tea from him in 2013.
