BAHAWALPUR: Jamaat-i-Islami Punjab chief Dr Syed Wasim Akhtar said on Tuesday that the government had failed to maintain law and order in the Punjab.

Talking to reporters, Akhtar said that robberies and street crime had increased to an alarming level in the province, especially in Lahore.

“The lives and dignity of the people are not safe. Street crimes have put a question mark on the performance of the Punjab Police,” he said. He said claims of good governance were untrue.

He demanded that the chief minister and the IG improve the police performance.

“The corrupt officials in the Police Department should be sacked and replaced with honest officers,” Akhtar said.

“There can be no peace and prosperity in the country while law is not the same for the rich and the poor,” he said.
