Dr Shakil Afridi’s wife and daughter met him in Central Prison Peshawar for the second time, reliable sources told The Express Tribune.
The Pakistani physician – who allegedly helped the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) run a fake vaccination programme to find Osama bin Laden – had been taken into custody for having alleged ties to a warlord.
According to sources, the meeting was held under tight security and in the presence of senior intelligence officials. “The hour-long meeting was kept a secret,” an official revealed.
Dr Afridi was sentenced to 33 years of imprisonment on May 24, 2012 for allegedly aiding the banned militant outfit Lashkar-e-Islam. However, the sentence was revoked in August 2013 by the FCR commissioner.
During his time in prison, Dr Afridi was closely monitored and was only allowed to meet his family members on certain occasions. On June 5, 2012 the K-P government allowed Afridi to meet his brother Jamil Afridi. Furthermore, his wife and sons met him in prison on December 12, 2013.
In March 2014, a one-man tribunal upheld Dr Afridi’s conviction. However, one of the charges against him was dropped and his jail term was reduced to 23 years.
