A meme featuring Grimes and Azealia Banks ignited a fiery social media argument between the two musicians.

The meme, posted on X (formerly Twitter), depicted Grimes as Glinda and Azealia as Elphaba from the musical Wicked. Grimes appeared to enjoy the idea, replying, “Hate to say it but would’ve been kinda lit,” hinting at the possibility of working together.

However, Azealia took issue with Grimes' comment, responding with a scathing critique that took aim at Grimes’ personal and professional life. The ‘Anna Wintour’ rapper blasted Grimes, referencing her past with ex-partner Elon Musk, and accused her of trying to present herself as a victim. “Girl, the way u are still trying to hold out on some weird as* innocent bullsh*t years later after u got dumped, cheated on, ur kids kidnapped,” Banks wrote. She also criticized Grimes’ relationship with Musk, calling it "PEAK white female delusion."

Banks didn’t stop there, continuing her rant by mocking Grimes’ situation with Musk and accusing her of using drama to deflect attention from her personal life. “Stop trying to squeeze the novelty out of this to deflect from the fact that Elon really dogged you,” Banks added. “It’s giving crack daddy sis. He’s on ozempic and tina feeling himself now. It’s finished.”

In response to the fiery comments, Grimes took to social media to clarify her intentions. “It was just a funny joke,” Grimes explained, adding that she didn’t intend to paint Azealia as a villain. She further stated, “i didn’t ‘get dumped’. I bounced. My amazing baby is asleep in my bed beside me, I’m in love. No regrets. Life is as beautiful as u want it to be. Ur insanely talented. Even after all this, I want u to win. Good bless Mlady.”

Grimes also posted a message calling Azealia "the best hater on the planet," praising her sharp wit. “The da Vinci of insults,” Grimes wrote, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of the interaction but ultimately accepting the chaos.

Despite their online clash, Grimes expressed no ill will toward Azealia, highlighting her talent and wishing her well.
