DUBAI:

South Africa batsman Ashwell Prince is eager for his side to return to the number one spot in Test cricket and stressed that consistency would be key for the team to achieve that.

“Regaining the number one spot in Test cricket is very important for us,” Prince told reporters after South Africa’s training session at the International Cricket Council Global Cricket Academy. “Both the upcoming series [against Pakistan and India] are big. We have five Test matches for the season so we would like to make the most of them.”

Prince also cited the examples of veteran players Mohammad Yousuf and Younus Khan as the main threat to South Africa in the Test series. “It’s obvious some experienced batsmen have returned and this will boost their batting quite a bit. Both Yousuf and Younus are Pakistan’s top six [batsmen].”

No room for complacency

Prince has ruled out any complacency from his side despite South Africa’s One-Day International (ODI) series win and insisted that Pakistan are a tough side. “There are more experienced players in our Test side but there won’t be the any complacency. We know we can’t underestimate them.”

Prince said that his side does not have a psychological advantage despite the series victory.

“Test cricket is a different ball game altogether. These days ODIs and Tests are very different. In ODIs, you have to contain runs and in Test cricket you have to bowl the batsman out. But obviously our boys will be confident.”

Adnan | 13 years ago | Reply It's shame that we have to get members of rival teams to tell us who our outstanding batsman are! How long has it taken the inept PCB to realise that experienced players like Yousuf and Younus are indispensible to the Pakistan side. Finally, the penny has dropped but only after humiliating defeats against England where the batting was so poor, even a bunch of school boys could have performed better! And all this because the current Chairman bore a grudge against one of the players (Younus) and the other (Yousuf)- who knows?!
