LAHORE:

A petition seeking a Supreme Court judge-led commission inquiry into the Model Town incident was filed in the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Saturday.

Advocate Muhammad Irfan – who filed the petition – said the earlier inquiry conducted by a tribunal of the LHC had failed to provide conclusive answers. He added that if the previous inquiry had failed to fix the blame, it should be set aside.

Irfan sought directions for the provincial government to constitute a judicial commission in view of suggestions made by representatives of the Minhajul Quran International. He said the charitable organisation had confidence in the apex court and would wholeheartedly accept its conclusions.

According to the petitioner, the inquiry conducted by the LHC tribunal was one-sided. Furthermore, no representative from the Minhajul Quran was allowed to assist the tribunal in its investigations.

Moreover, Irfan also planned to amend the law and enhance the jurisdiction, power and authority of a tribunal so that its recommendations could be implemented and enforced as judicial order. He said that if these changes were approved, legal action could be taken against the government if it failed to implement them.

The petitioner asked the court to order the government to provide him the inquiry tribunal’s report in view of Article 19-A of the Constitution.
