Education Minister Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan said on Monday using spare land at campuses of public universities could help them become self-reliant.

He was addressing a ceremony to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Punjab University  and Lahore Development Authority for the construction of a link road between Maulana Shaukat Ali Road and Wahdat Road on the university’s land.

PU Vice Chancellor Mujahid Kamran, Khwaja Ahmed Hassaan, Mustafa Imam, LDA DG Ahad Cheema and syndicate members were also present. The minister said the government was committed to providing modern transport facilities to citizens.

Kamran said the university met 67 per cent of expenditures through its own sources. However, he said expenditures had increased due to increase in salaries.

Some PU faculty members however opposed the move.

“This amounts to selling the university land. The PU masterplan bars the administration from using land for other than prescribed purposes,” said a teacher requesting anonymity. “The MoU amounts to justifying the university land for commercial purposes. This is shame.”
