FAISALABAD:

Scores of shopkeepers staged a protest demonstration on Saturday against police for their failure to check crime in the city.

The protesters burnt tyres and placed obstacles on the Ghulam Muhammadabad Road suspending traffic for hours.

Naseer Ahmad Chattha, one of the protesters, told the media criminals had been operating in the broad daylight.

“We have requested police to take steps to provide us security but they have done nothing in this regard,” Chattha said.

He accused Ghulam Muhammadabad police of victimising complainants.

“Whenever a citizen goes to the police station to file a complaint, police harass him and put pressure on him to withdraw his complaint.”

A police team headed by the Ghulam Muhammadabad station house officer held talks with the protesters who then called off the protest after they were assured that the police would launch a crackdown on criminals.
