A police constable on Saturday was beaten up by an angry mob, believing he was spying for their rivals.
Constable Adnan was walking in the Christian Town in plainclothes. Afzaal, Akhtar and Nauraiz, all residents of the area, assaulted him.
“The youth overpowered the constable and thrashed him. They thought he had been sent by their rivals,” Kotwali police said.
Many people also gathered at the scene. “They first tried to rescue the policeman. However, when Afzaal and his accomplices told them that he was working for their rivals, they also started beating up the policeman,” the police said.
After receiving information, a police party, headed by the Kotwali SHO, reached the area and rescued the constable.
The SHO told The Express Tribune that the constable had not lodged any complaint against the accused. “We will take action against the men involved in the attack after Adnan registers a complaint against the accused,” he said.
