Use of steroids Secy to look into PU athletes’ complaints

LAHORE: The Chief Minister’s Office has ordered the Higher Education Department to take appropriate action on a complaint by some Punjab University (PU) athletes that they were forced to use steroids and prohibited medicines. An official letter, a copy of which is available with The Express Tribune, was sent in this regard to the higher education secretary on July 8. Bushra Memood, a PU student, had written to the chief minister on July 3 stating that some athletes were experiencing medical complications due to “excessive use of steroids”. The PU administration had denied the allegations. PU VC Mujahid Kamran had formed a fact-finding committee to look into the allegations. The committee had asked Mehmood to record her statement at Registrar Office on Tuesday. However, she did not appear before the committee saying she did not trust it. “I don’t trust a committee which is chaired by a retired PU official,” she said. A PU spokesman said he had no knowledge about the chief minister’s letter. Published in The Express Tribune, July 16th, 2014.
