ISLAMABAD/ LAHORE:

Arsalan Iftikhar, the son of former chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, accused Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan of providing false information in the oath section of his nomination papers.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) provided a copy of Imran’s nomination papers that he had submitted before contesting last year’s general elections to Arsalan on his request.

Addressing a press conference after receiving the papers, Arsalan demanded Imran’s resignation and announced that he would approach the office of National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq to get the PTI chief disqualified as a member of parliament.

“I have also asked the ECP to provide me copies of the references filed against Imran by Farooq Sattar and Sher Afgan Niazi some years back,” he told The Express Tribune.

He said he was getting all these documents on the advice of his lawyers, who would prepare a reference against the PTI chairman.

Arsalan levelled charges against Imran after the PTI chief accused the former chief justice of vote fraud to favour Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in the May 11, general elections last year.

He also wants to approach the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) and other religious forums to get their decrees on Imran’s conduct under Article 62-D of the constitution.

On the other hand, Imran Khan denies all charges and his party accuses Arslan and his father instead of being backed by PML-N, which wants to neutralise the PTI chief through unsubstantiated propaganda.

The PTI chief had questioned the controversial appointment of Arsalan as the vice-president of the Balochistan Investment Board.

Succumbing to the wave of criticism after the appointment, Arsalan resigned from the post.

Asad Umar, a leading PTI legislator, had earlier said the Balochistan chief minister, against relevant rules and regulations, had appointed a corruption-tainted person.

“It is good that the government has realised its mistake and removed an incompetent person from a highly important position.”
