KARACHI:

Five men were shot dead in the different parts of the city on Tuesday.

Three suspects were killed during an alleged encounter with the police in the SITE area. The police said that the men were killed during an exchange of fire. They added that the men were from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and were wanted in several target killings cases, including that of policemen.

According to the police, the encounter took place when four unidentified men on two motorcycles started firing and threw a hand grenade at a police mobile from the Pak Colony police station. At the time, the police personnel were busy carrying out a routine snap check near Mewashah Graveyard.

The police vehicle was partially damaged in the attack but no one was hurt. The SHO of the Pak Colony police station, Munir Chandio, said that the policemen responded quickly and started chasing the suspects. “We managed to chase them into the SITE area,” said SHO Chandio while talking to The Express Tribune.

Once in SITE, the police and militants exchanged several rounds of bullets in which three of the militants got injured. One of them, however, managed to escape. The injured were taken to the hospital but died on the way. Their bodies were moved to the Edhi morgue in Sohrab Goth. They were identified as Imran alias Muhammad Khitab, Omar and Abu Tariq.

SHO Chandio claimed that the men belonged to the TTP-Swat and were involved in attacks on policemen particularly in the district West area.

In an unrelated incident, a young man was gunned down when unidentified men opened fire at him near Frontier Colony, Orangi Town within the limits of the Pirabad police station.

The police claimed that the deceased was wearing a police t-shirt and was targeted because the assailants thought he was a policeman. A three-year-old girl who was with the deceased at the time of the incident was also injured. The deceased and injured were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for an autopsy and medical treatment.

Separately, an unidentified young man was shot dead in an apparent target killing in Malir 15 within the limits of the Malir City police station. The police said that men on motorcycles shot at the victim multiple times and killed him on the spot. The body was taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for the autopsy.
