I needed the win, says relieved Lewis Hamilton

Mercedes driver vows to avoid future complacency after securing British GP.

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton insisted that he ‘needed’ the win at the British Grand Prix to help regain his confidence halfway through the Formula One championship, according to ESPN.

The 2008 champion was victorious on home track, while his teammate and rival for the title, Nico Rosberg, retired with a gearbox problem. The result paid big dividends for Hamilton, who is now just four points behind Rosberg in the drivers’ standings.

However, the Briton said that he was far from delighted to see his teammate retire.

“I don’t really feel anything for the [Rosberg] retirement,” said Hamilton. “I thought I’d be here saying, ‘finally!’ but I don’t feel that way, I was really looking forward to racing him.”

The win came as a relief to Hamilton, who started sixth from the grid after blowing a chance to claim pole position when he failed to finish his final qualifying lap in the belief that the track was not getting faster.

“I’ll learn from that, so it doesn’t matter if it’s raining or whatever, I’ll make sure I push to the end,” vowed Hamilton. “I’ve been racing long enough to know that but sometimes you make mistakes you knew the solution to.”
