Under the influence: Pregnant woman dies, 3 injured by ‘drunk’ cop’s car
A pregnant woman died and three other persons received serious injuries when a police sub-inspector allegedly under the influence of intoxicants rammed his car into a motorcycle they were riding on Friday.
Garh Maharaja police said Sub Inspector Arif Ali was driving his car at a high speed when he rammed into the motorcycle. Tahira Bibi, a resident of Sharif Abad, died instantly. Her father-in-law, Khalid Hussain, son Mudassar Ali and 10-year-old daughter Parveen Bibi were seriously injured. They were taken to a local hospital and later referred to the Jhang district headquarters hospital. Doctors treating them said their condition was critical.
Najeeb Ali, an eyewitness, told journalists that the car the sub inspector was driving was careening on the road. He said it was apparent that the driver was under the influence of intoxicants. Ali said that Hussain, who was driving the motorcycle, tried his best to move out of the car’s way but failed.
Ali said when the car slammed into the motorcycle, the woman died on the spot. He said the sub-inspector got out of the car and ran away from the scene.
Hearing the screams of the wounded children, several people gathered at the scene. They informed police who took them to a hospital.
He said that local residents searched the sub-inspector’s car and found four bottles of liquor.
“This confirmed our suspicions that the policeman was drunk when he hit the motorcycle,” Ali said.
Garh Maharaja SHO Muhammad Waris told The Express Tribune that they had registered a case against Sub-Inspector Muhammad Arif under Section 320 of the Pakistan Penal Code (unintentional murder by negligent driving). He said the sub-inspector had been posted at the Garh Maharaja police station.
“A police team has been constituted to trace the whereabouts of the accused... he is still at large,” the SHO added.
