ISLAMABAD:

A man allegedly affiliated with the Ansarul Ummah terrorist organisation was arrested in a joint operation between the Islamabad Police and officials from an intelligence agency, the police said on Wednesday.

Tayyab alias Umer Pagal, 20, was arrested during the operation in Rawat in the Sihala police area. The police claimed to have recovered a pistol and 20 rounds of ammunition from him.

The police claimed Tayyab was trained in Miranshah, North Waziristan Agency and came to the twin cities last October along with his accomplice, Shah Hussain alias Mansoor to allegedly carry out targeted killings. Police said Tayyab was hiding in Islamabad and was allegedly involved in weapons trafficking and terrorism.

Police alleged that Tayyab and his accomplice murdered a police officer and attempted to arrange a suicide attack on an Imambargah in Rawalpindi. His accomplice was shot dead before he could carry out the attack, the police added.

Police claimed Tayyab was also an accomplice of the nine alleged terrorists arrested from various areas of the twin cities since January 2014.

Five hand grenades and two pistols were recovered from the previously nabbed men, police said. The police claimed that those nabbed earlier, had named Tayyab as a close aide.

Two cases were registered against Tayyab at the Sihala Police Station.
