Due recognition: Sindhi writers receive literary awards

Each of the recipients was given a shield and a Rs25,000 cash award.

HYDERABAD: Sindhi writers of different genres of literature received annual literary awards at a ceremony organised at the Sindh Language Authority (SLA) on Friday.

Each of the recipients was given a shield and a Rs25,000 cash award. However, Sindh culture adviser Sharmila Farooqi, who attended the event as its chief guest, announced an additional Rs25,000 for all of them.

Rehmatullah Manyuni received an award in the category of story, Tara Mir Chandani for novel, Ahmed Solangi for poetry, Manzoor Jokhio for travelogue, Zeb Nizamani for children's literature, Sobho Gianchandani for autobiography, Prof Hero Shevkani for literary critique, Mukhtiar Ahmed Mallah for research, Nawaz Khan Zanur for translation and Anwar Abro for social sciences.

Farooqi advised the SLA to have three awards for best literary works in each of the ten genres. Her department, she added, also wants to introduce a life time achievement award.

The advisor said that, as part of their efforts to win national language status for Sindhi, the culture department is preparing a draft that will soon be presented in the National Assembly for legislation.

Farooqi also announced that her department will arrange a two-day national Sindhi language and literature festival in September 2014.

SLA secretary Taj Joyo said that the authority will mark a year for literary idol Muhammad Ibrahim Joyo starting from August 2014 to August 2015. Joyo will turn 99 on August 12 this year.
