LAHORE:

Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) leader Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has denounced arrests and raids carried out by police ahead of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Dr Tahirul Qadri’s arrival, saying it has revealed ‘the democracy of civilian dictators’.

“These arrests are an open violation of fundamental human rights and democracy. The movement [against the government] will gain strength due to such acts,” Elahi said. He was talking to media after meeting with Dr Qadri’s son Hassan Mohyuddin in Lahore.

Elahi said PAT had assured it would remain peaceful, but still a dozen or so PAT leaders in Rawalpindi and Islamabad were arrested.

“This has established the intention of the rulers. But they cannot block the way of the movement, which has started for the welfare of the people,” the PML-Q leader said.

Criticising Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, he said they talk of democracy but have put a ban on peaceful protests which is unthinkable in any democratic country.
