KARACHI:

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain has demanded the government arrest those responsible for the killing of the party's MNA, Tahira Asif.

"She joined the MQM and took active part in the struggle against injustices," said in a statement on Friday. "Despite receiving several threats, she did not back down and continued to carry on with her mission."

Hussain added that the MQM will not forget the contributions of Tahira Asif to help raise awareness amongst the people of Punjab.

Hundreds of party workers and leaders attended the Ghaibana Namaz-e-Janaza held at the Lal Qila Ground, Karachi on Friday. The Rabita Committee has also announced three-day mourning for the deceased.

A candlelight vigil will be held on Saturday evening at Lal Qila while the party will arrange Soyem across the country on Sunday.

The MQM chief said that the brutal killings of their workers in Lahore and the murder of MNA Tahira Asif had been done to divert the army's attention from the operation.

Condolences

Former president Pervez Musharraf called Hussain to offer his condolence over the demise of Tahira Asif.  Musharraf also condemned her killing, saying that the culprits should be arrested.

Raja Pervez Ashraf, former prime minister, also strongly condemned the state repression. He expressed this view while talking to Hussain. He also condemned killings of Tehreek-e-Minhajul Quran workers and an elected member of the National Assembly.
