A high-level meeting on the internal security situation in the country on Tuesday authorised the Army to carry out ‘appropriate action’ against terrorist hideouts following the recent spate of attacks - including the audacious assault at the Karachi airport.
The meeting, which was held against the backdrop of precarious security situation in the country was presided by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and attended by Army Chief General Raheel Sharif as well as Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.
Chief of General Staff Lt. General Ishfaq Nadeem Ahmad and head of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) counter-intelligence Major General Nasir Dilawar Shah were also present during the huddle, which lasted over three hours.
Interestingly, Director General Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Lt. General Zaheerul Islam, who regularly appears at such meetings, was not present. Sources familiar with the development said that the spy chief was out of station.
A brief statement issued by the prime minister’s office said that the law and order situation in the country was reviewed during the meeting. “Matters relating to Internal and regional security including FATA, Karachi and Baluchistan were discussed,” it added.
However, an official familiar with the closed-door discussions told The Express Tribune that participants of the meeting acknowledged the fact that prospects of a peace deal with Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) were all but over following Sunday’s brazen attack that left dozens dead in Karachi.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official told The Express Tribune that several options including launching an all-out offensive against militant hideouts in the North Waziristan Agency (NWA) were discussed.
The official revealed that final decision on the course of action against the militants would be taken after all stakeholders – including political leadership – are taken into confidence.
However, in an effort to counter the immediate threat of terrorism, the Army was given a go-ahead to use ‘whatever means at their disposal to preempt further attacks,” the official disclosed.
A senior security official said the Army leadership was very clear in its approach that “we should not be apologetic in front of these terrorists who have declared an open war against us.”
During the marathon meeting, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar gave a detailed briefing on the attack at Karachi Airport.
According to sources, the premier expressed his dismay over the lack of preemptive measures despite prior intelligence about the possible terrorist attacks at Karachi’s busiest air hub. Subsequently, security arrangements at all key government installations including airports were also reviewed.

Its really amazing to see the army receiving "authorization"... Country is under attack daily, people dying, cowards running in and out of country at will and army is silent. Now that it really has received the authorization lets see what it does.
Peace talk is over and it is time for military operation.whole pakistani nation is standing behind army. someone has said Army doesn't loose war if they know that there is a loving nation standing behind them for support. So, support army and pray for succesfull operation.
It was long awaited. Entire nation looking at Pakistan Army for their action against terrorists.
let us end this experiment of Pakistan as a independent nation as we cannot rule England, USA or CHINA should be pakistan on lease for 10,000 years but i think they will refuse
@Sshery: @Concerned Ali: Think beyond boot polishing.
Please Army Take over Please Please Please
If you look at the picture of the late, great Quaid e Azam, it it leaning (tilted) to one side. No wonder the government of Pakistan is confused how to realign it. None of the attendants noticed it. Salams
Reaction against action what a wise state strategy
Straight Action by the Army minus spoon feeding intervention of the politicians in the current ruling party can only save our country.
Come on ET. Intentionally you chose a provoking picture. If it is PM house then who is PM? Sitting at par with PM from angular point of view indicates who is real power stake holder. Whether Pak army is capable to curb terrorism is also questionable. In times of Pervez Musharraf he had all the powers but self became victim of terrorists attack. So those thinking army alone can curb this menace have incorrect approach. Whole nation has to stand against it if some concrete results are to be achieved.
It is not possible anymore to eradicate the widespread militancy in Pakistan with weapons and counter violence.
But it is possible to locate the main wire pullers who are disguised as a clergy, politicians, policeman, businessman or perhaps an armyman.
Pakistan lacks people with over-average IQ who can counter this dirty mind game intellectually.
Take action.... then reaction and then more action. Until the sanctuaries/sleeper cells are not cleared and madrassah not regulated/registered up and down the country, bombing in tribal areas is clearly not the solution.
All the best Pakistan army. The whole Pakistani society and international community should provide moral and logistical support to Pakistani army for the sake of world peace. LTTE was deadlier than Taliban, but now there is no trace of LTTE in this world. Taliba's end is a foregone conclusion. Just wait and see.
You cannot be with Army and against Government or you cannot be with Government and against Army. If we want to see a strong Pakistan we need unity
not too sure how human life and death has such different meaning because of geography and economy, in tribal areas every week same number of causalities are taking place, it is sad how humans are measured in terms of dollars and not because of being humans. from un to world politicians all spoke against karachi killings, and not even hrw has anything to say about extrajudicial killings in waziristan
@A:
Yeah, Pakistan did a massive operation in 1971 too. Good luck this time.
At least common sense has started prevailing and we must take quick and brisk action in the language these terrorists understand and “we should not be apologetic in front of these terrorists who have declared an open war against us.”
If the government was really serious about tackling terrorism they would have bombarded South Punjab also. But this attempt by government on pashtoon area is clear violation of human rights
its important that army should not repeat 1999 mistakes
Should PM not be chairing the meeting? Picture shows PM and COAS co-chairing the meeting.
Pakistan Army Zindabad... Crush the TTP. All nation is with Pakistan Army.
Had this been done earlier lives of the innocents were not wasted. Army should not do any more delay in doing a massive operation and eradicate the foreign funded elements from the motherland to save it.
There is a mistake in caption. Prime Minister name is Nawaz Sharif not Raheel Sharif
The PaK army is already doing North Waziristan operation. This has caused chaos to spread.
Pakistan army and government have no cards left except to pound their chest and yell!
There will be a KP/FATA/ Balochistan referendum. Pakistan is only Punjab
Another meeting another paf bombing. then same old placating statements from political leaders.watch nothing will change, carnage will continue till population at large wants to get rid of "mujahadins". It appears neither prime minister nor opposition has will to do the the right thing for Pakistan. Why would any cricket team or any airline travel to Pakistan? No tourist in his right mind will travel to Pakistan? Arabisation of the country is what People want?
The body talk of the Army Chief says it all. He exudes confidence, looks like a take-charge-guy.
Do us another favour army, please take over this country.
Let us see what our army do after go ahead as many believe army wants but politicians don't. They seem to be on the same page, at least this time.let us see.
Everyone who is with the Army don't comment thumb up. Let us show the nation is FOR military action! We stand with our soldiers! We are STRONG! We are ONE! We are PAKISTAN!
