KARACHI: Health authorities have ordered a probe into the deaths of four infants who were on ventilators at a private hospital in the Korangi area of Karachi.

The medical facility allegedly ran out of oxygen supply in the wake of a power failure, according to a report carried by AFP. A report will be submitted to the provincial government within 24 hours.

A day earlier, seven infants were brought to Shah National Children’s Hospital in Allahwala Town. “Seven infants were brought from the National Institute of Child Health and other healthcare facilities to our hospital,” the hospital owner, Shah, told The Express Tribune. “Two children were confirmed dead on arrival and another two expired later.” The deceased children were identified as Aroosa, Samia, Shaista and Mustafa.

The police suspect that medical malpractice led to the children’s death. “The police will register cases of criminal negligence against the hospital management, if the parents press charges,” claimed Korangi Industrial Area SHO Tariq Rahim.

Soon after the incident, family members protested outside the hospital. They were joined by Korangi residents who stormed the hospital.
