KARACHI:

In order to strengthen earthquake monitoring in the country's northern belt, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has installed a new seismic broadband observatory in Hunza Valley, Gilgit-Baltistan, to enhance real-time detection and detailed analysis of low-intensity tremors.

The new installation has been set up to improve surveillance of seismic activity in the Hunza region and enable authorities to detect minor earthquake events as they occur.

Previously, three seismic stations were operational in Gilgit, Skardu and Chilas. However, coverage in the northern areas remained limited, necessitating further expansion to ensure more comprehensive monitoring.

According to the PMD, seismic monitoring in the region was further reinforced following recent reports of explosion-like sounds and mild tremors in Chapursan Valley, Gilgit-Baltistan.
