As the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf gears up for its power show at Dhobi Ghat on Sunday (today), several impediments and distractions, ascribed to the district administration, have propped up throughout the city.
PTI officials claim that the government has “gone all out in creating hurdles”. From permit restrictions and road constructions to lack of security and threatening transporters, the party leaders claim that they have had to fight tooth and nail to make the demonstration possible.
They allege that the government had initially refused them permission to host the demonstration at the historic Dhobi Ghat but gave in when they threatened to demonstrate in front of the district coordination officer’s house.
PTI chief Imran Khan and other party leaders are scheduled to address the gathering. More than 20,000 chairs have been set up at Dhobi Ghatt. The ground has also been decorated with flexes and large posters emblazoned with Khan’s pictures.
PTI Central Executive Committee member Dr Asad Muazzam told The Express Tribune that the demonstration will be a historic event which will “jolt the castles of rulers who have fooled the nation for decades”. He said the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz had promised to provide people basic amenities after coming to power. “It seems that they have forgotten their promises and have left the people to deal with the worst crises in Pakistan’s history which keep aggravating by the day.”
Security arrangements
Police personnel supervised by Madina Town Superintendent Nasir Ahmad Sial flag-marched in the city on Saturday in connection with the demonstration.
More than 40 police vans traversed from Liaquat Road to Chiniot Bazaar Chowk, Kotwali Chowk to Imam Bargah Chowk, from behind the GC University to Nishat Cinema, Narowala Road to Katchery Bazaar, Rajbah Road to Jhang Bazaar Chowk, Novelty Bridge to Samundri Road, D-Type Colony to Satiana Road and D-Ground to Koh-i-Noor Chowk to ensure security at the demonstration.
City Police Officer Dr Haider Asrif said women’s police force had also been summoned to check and ensure security for women at the event. He said eight superintendents, 12 deputy superintendents, 40 inspectors and 2,860 policemen have been deputed to ensure security at the protest venue.
He said sniffer dogs would be used to clear the stage area. Plain-clothed and uniformed police commandos will be posted around the stage and at all entrances to Dhobi Ghat. No one will be allowed to enter the venue except via the walk-through security gates, he said.Special police commandos have been deployed at buildings around the venue. PTI Central Media Coordinator Rizwan Chaudhry said, “We requested security for Sunday’s demonstration but were told to post our volunteers.”
He said the government was employing “cheap tactics” to hinder the demonstration. “We have been told that there are security concerns while they are arranging a public concert on the same day. How do they plan to arrange security for that?”
As many as 500 PTI members have volunteered to ensure security at the venue, Chaudhry said.“Ensuring security is the government’s responsibility. This is a peaceful protest in which citizens will be participating. The government cannot be absolved of its responsibility.”
He said the government had also threatened transporters with cancellation of their permits if they facilitated crowds to the demonstration.
The office of the Faisalabad district coordination officer (DCO) says all security arrangements and administrative matters have been taken up with the PTI leadership.
Riaz Anjum, PSO to the DCO, told The Express Tribune that the DCO had held a meeting with PTI leaders and they had seemed satisfied with the arrangements. Rejecting claims of any compromise regarding security arrangements for the demonstration, Anjum said as many as 3,000 police constables had been deputed. “The arrangements have been made while keeping our standard security precautions in mind.”
Wooing the crowd
The administration has also announced a free musical night at Bohranwala Ground on Sunday evening. PTI members say this is a bid to distract crowds from their demonstration. Famous Indian and Pakistani singers have been invited to perform at the concert. Lucky Irani Circus has been invited to set up the big top on Sunday to coincide with the PTI’s show. Tickets will be sold at discounted rates.
Several roads, including Jail Road, Jhang Road, Susan Road and Radio Pakistan Road, leading to Dhobi Ghat have been dug up for re-carpeting.
Asad Muazzam of the PTI criticised the administration for arranging the musical night on the same day and time and said “such tactics cannot save the rulers from the wrath of the nation”.
He said people were aware of the government’s ill-conceived and anti-people policies.
PSO Anjum rejected the PTI officials’ claims regarding the recent re-carpeting of all major arteries leading to the venue. “All road constructions have been in progress since March,” he said. “Our deadline for these roads is June 30 and such constructions are taking place with the deadline in mind.” He said the government was not trying to affect the turnout at the PTI rally. The permit for holding the rally, he said, was granted under conditions which are standard for any such activity.

Mr Salem you may be sick of these rallies, but the nation wants these rallies as this is the only way to get the corrupt rulers out. Stop watching them, we love to see Imran khan in action. As far as his performance is concerned, he is doing fine in KPK. You please stop being a stooge of that Kashmiri rascal known as Nawaz Sharif. @Saleem:
the only development in KPK made by PTI government is removal of encroachments in Nathiagali because IK is frequent visitors with his pals there and his laxuary vehicles get stuck in the bazars
Like this PTI to hold its Faisalabad Dhobi Ghat today. Taking after Islamabad demonstrate by Pakistan (PTI)Tehreek-i-Insaf Imran Khan against irregularities in last general elections, http://thisreals.com/pti-to-hold-its-faisalabad-dhobi-ghat-today.php
@Asad@NYC: Voter verification is controlled by the Election Commission and the courts, not Nawaz & Co. Besides, haven't we already learned that thumbprint verification doesn't work? In previous verifications, most of the prints were unidentifiable because the voter's print was too smudged to be useful. In short, thumbprint verification based on prints from the last election doesn't work. A better system is necessary, imho, but it will have to be built for the next election.
@Aslam Shah: Please enlighten me how IK doing a jalsa will help solve all these problems? How much money and resources are being wasted on dharnas which otherwise could have been invested in a power plant or water treatment facility.
@Ozair: PTI is not the whim of one man??? Really? PTI was IK's creation and if he leaves the party, it will die with him. Furthermore, let's leave KP aside, IK is the MNA of Rawalpindi. What has he done for the people of Rawalpindi except dharnas?
@Saleem: Good analysis. Wholeheartedly agree with every word you said about IK.
Dear Imran Khan. Please make a jalsa in gujrat. We also want stop of load shedding, solar power plant and clean Water. Perhaps PTI should make jalsa every day all over Pakistan.
Pakistan will never be a democratic country as long as the sitting government will influence the local governments to create hindrance or even try to scuttle any opposition peaceful rallies. The local officials should stand up and resist unfair pressures from provincial government, let the opposition political parties stage any PEACEFUL rallies if they want to and that’s where the democracy will flourish. It seems that those who came into power by fraudulent votes are the most worried people and they are the ones who are creating hurdles. I remind those who are in power in local government that they should refrain from creating any hurdles because tomorrow some other government will be coming in and they will be targeted them fairly or unfairly, I would say fairly. By the way PTI should be fair handed and make an example for allowing any opposition political party to stage a peaceful political rally in K-P and make sure that no local officials create any hurdles like the one we see in Faisalabad. The dirty tricks in Faisalabad are so transparent and reflect on local people and most likely the majority of the local people don't even support these under handed tricks.
Dear Imran Khan. Please come and make a jalsa in Gujrat. We can see that PTIs jalsa in Faislabad is beneficial for the citizens there. We also want N-league to stop loadshedding here, to build a solar power plant here and to build a state of the art water purification plant here. Perhaps PTI should make jalsa every day all over Pakistan.
Imran has plenty of time. He has nothing to do. So he decided to waste the nation's time.
I don't know why people think that rallies and protest against rigging is threatening the democracy, speaking for your right always justified. And also on the other they say, that its been one year PTI have no complains about elections, really???? Shame on you, PTI leading this protest for more than a year. I would say they should go beyond the system because system has failed to provide the justice.
@Umar: He actually want to say MNA.
@Ahmed: He never demanded mid term election but reforms in electoral system and punish those who did helped in rigging.So the same drama of rigging will not happen after 4 year
I see the PML sheep out in force. Mian Sahib doens`t give a hoot about you, you will see that next time you have a run in with the police. You are just sheep voting for the family business.
@Gullee: Public may reject him or any other politician but why should public forgive and forget rigging so these same family parties keep coming into power for the next 100 years without any hindrance as this system will not filter these family companies parties.What IK is doing is not to get back power but to correct the system so the future generation and see and participate in free and fair election., Otherwise decalare themselves as Amir-ul-Momneen as PM once tried in the past and stop showing to the nation and world that we are democratic party.
"much ado about nothing", new slogan of PTI. All the time protesting and doing nothing.
@zahra: well said.
Silly, childish and immature !
@Saleem: u r wrong brother change your mind.......You are a by-product of PMLN
@Ozair: I can say onlu one thing. Hahaha.
Musical Show, Lucky Irani Circus??? after attending PTI rally u dont need a circus :)
Pml n is full of corruption! IMRAN KHAN pti is the best! All hail IMRAN KHAN. Please come.
I think Imran has nothing to do. So he is also wasting others' time as well. Imran should show sportsman spirit and accept defeat with open heart. Public rejected his dirty politics.
If PTI wins, there is no rigging. If PTI loses, there is rigging. Dirty and intolerant politics of PTI.
KPK is suffering due to bad governance and corruption of PTI people in the province and IK is busy in rallies. There is no law in KPK. There is no law and order. Corruption is at its peak in KPK. PTI will not be able to win even 10 seats in the next elections. Biggest shame for PTI.
PTI should leave the Rona Dhona politics and focus on KPK. Millions of rupees spent on public rallies can be spent for betterment of KPK people. I am searching for new KPK that was promised by IK to be build in 90 days. Now almost a year is gone. Where is that new KPK????
Puppets of establishment in full action. Imran Khan is enemy of democracy and political stability in Pakistan. Shame for him.
IK is damaging the Democratic system by demanding mid term elections just 1 year after the voting. And that too when the situation in the country is very sensitive. He should have focused on KPK where he was elected, instead he is more interested in Punjab. Looks like power is all he is interested in. I voted for you and because of you i had to vote Shiekh rasheed. Dont make me regret my decision. Stop these shows and do something practical in KPK, people still look upto you for hope.
Try to be neutral ET and try to print others comments, Bye the way ET how much you are paid (daily or monthly) by this social media prime minister I mean IK.
Or you also need the same treatment as ABKhan and IK are getting ie "Qeemay wala Naan".
I know you will no post this. Now I have come to the conclusion to send you the comments at least your so called paid judges read it out and come to know others response.
Saleem, by any chance, are you Saleem Safi?
THE SCARED PMLN HAS ARRANGED FREE CONCERT OF NASEBO LAL. Those who don't care about the future of Pakistan can join the concert, the rest who worry about the future of Pakistan can join the Jalsa today!
No matter what you sayyyyyyyyy
PTI all the way!!!!!!
@khan: Nothing to say but only hahahahahaha
KP govt is doing very well in KP. Now it looks like there is some govt in KP as compared to the previous govt of ANP. Changes are coming at gross root level but its impact will be surely big for the common people of KP. Good luck PTI and Good luck Pakistan. Our vote is not wasted..
@Saleem:
And we all know the treatment for your sickness is "Qeemay wala Naan".
A strong Opposition (the voice of the suppressed) is fundamental for any progressive Democracy.........................................the louder the thunder the more powerful the lightning!
The worst rigging was carried out by corruption party waderas in sinned province and now it's a vulgar joke to see them howling rigging with PTI
Abid Sher Ali claims that Faisalabad is PML N "garh". He has openly challanged IK for a fight. This sabre rattling is all ok- as long he understands that it should come with NO RIGGING!!!
The question is....... which circus would you go to?
Lucky Irani or............?
Such a looser PML(N), using tax payers money and resources to detract crowds away from PTI rallies
@saleem
Why are you getting sick sitting at home. Just do not watch TV covering those rallies.
I heard last time security bill (30000 police & rangers force) was in billions. IK thinks it's a good use of resources to have these rallies every weekend?
@Saleem . I completely disagree with your analysis. PTI is not run by the whim of only one man that if he is focused on election rigging that means KP govt performance will be affected. Please note that KPK has a govt with ministers running things over there. So if IK is busy in some activity, that doesn't mean that KPK govt activities comes to a halt.
@Saleem: If you are to read the news with focus, you will understand the ground reality. The N league government which had always been punjab centric is now in the centre. What it is doing now is using state machinery to create hurdles for other parties. If you read recent news, the wheat issue (which is creating artificial shortage in punjab to raise prices, whereas other provinces have abundant supply), to shahbaz sharif using state machinery to visit china, for the betterment of Punjab not Pakistan, it is all a farce. I voted N league in the election, but I am really disappointed with their performance so far. I think if IK manages to make the ECP a free autonomous institution, so that future generations can hold free and fair elections, it would be an achievement. Take out some time and look at the KP governments website. Talk to people from that area, and you will see the difference. Also, look at N leagues website and how it is a family party. There are so many institutions without a head, due to the N league running out of relatives. And I predict something major in KP tomorrow. This has been N leagues diversion tactics throughout its previous campaigns as well. Case in point, last Jalsa, and the blast in Peshawar. That is certainly not a coincidence? I understand causation does not imply causality but there is something fishy about it, no? P.S ET please publish, I am seriously beginning to question your impartiality because you never seem to publish anything anti N league.
Don't worry Imran khan may Allah be with you Teach these filthy N leagues a good lesson. You are a true hero
Power has gotten into the head of Mr.Imran Khan. This is plain crazy. Just how many ordinary wage-earners will be affected by this "show of power", Mr.Richie Rich will never know.
Nawaz & Co can stop all this by just thumb verifying the 4 jurisdictions. Why aren't they going for it is beyond my comprehensions.
@Saleem: Im from KP and ere we have big change from ANP to PTI, we see better management and better governance in many area but people like you are always negative and cant see any part of the country doing good under non Noon leadership. You are like sheep being led to slaughter.
I am beginning to get sick of these rallys. The biggest head turning rally that Imran Khan can deliver is to make KP a model state. So far he has "failed" to do so. I wish journalist could go and ask people of KP if they see a change in their lives between last ANP versus present PTI government. The people that I talked to don't feel that freeze that Imran Khan, who lives at a hilltop at Bani Gala Islamabad, feels.
Please tell me Mr. Khan what more you have delivered to your constituency before start throwing stones at PML (N), which like yours has a dismal record of their election promises.
