LAHORE: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday said that “attractive tariffs” for coal fired power plants have drawn various international investors to invest in power plants in Pakistan, as he accorded his approval for two new power plants to be built in Gadani.

Reviewing pace of work on Gadani power project in Lahore on Saturday, the premier also appreciated Chinese investment in the energy sector.

During the course of the meeting, Nawaz gave his approval for construction of two additional coal fired plants to be built by the government in Gadani in IPP mode. Funds for the projects will be allocated from PSDP.

Previously, Nawaz had been given a detailed briefing on the status of the project and was told that the feasibility study of the infrastructure would be completed by the end of next month.

Furthermore, he was told that the work on land leveling and grading on the site will start within the next three weeks and will be completed by August.

Similarly, jetty break water and allied infrastructure will be completed in 32 months.

So these are to be built by the Government itself and not by many international investors who are supposedly queuing up waiting to build coal fired plants.

The fact is that in order to obtain funding from banks, without which leveraging the plants will not be viable, they have to carry out Environmental Studies. Most people know that this will not be easy to pass due to the location, nature of the coal, water supplies etc.

This is why, apart from the plant or two by the Chinese (who are not bound by environmental considerations), hardly any international investor will invest in such plants. This is why the Govt is having to do this now to save face.
