KARACHI:

The foundation stone of a new examination hall in Karachi University (KU), which will cater to the needs of the candidates from the colleges affiliated to the varsity, was laid on Wednesday by the Karachi University Alumni Trust (KUAT) president Captain Naseemul Haq.

KU alumni residing in New York donated $13,000 for the construction of the hall. These funds were presented in 1999 to the vice-chancellor (VC) and founder of the KUAT, Prof Zafar Zaidi. He died in 2001 before the plans could be implemented and the next VC, Prof Zafar Saeed Saify, requested that the funds be used to provide need-cum-merit scholarships for the students. However, Naseemul Haq invested the $13,000 in long-term deposit and gave his funds to provide the scholarships.

The construction of the examination hall will cost an approximate Rs7 million. Currently, the university spends about Rs4 million every year to conduct the examinations within the premises of the university.

Prof Mohammad Qaiser, members of the KUAT, and faculty and staff of the university were present on the occasion.
