From an economic standpoint, the state of Gujarat is considered as a poster for Modi’s performance. A number of people, including the business community in Pakistan, look at Modi as the man who may be able to do economic miracles for the rest of India and even take some hard decisions for improving bilateral trade between the two countries. Considering what many in India say about the need for accountability on how Gujarat was turned around or special concessions given to the corporate sector, it is a tough challenge for the new prime minister to prove his worth. This would include creating a fine balance between the rich and greedy corporate sector and the upcoming middle class to making it work for the millions of have-nots that India has in abundance.
Issues become even more complicated with the need to strike a balance between Hindutva politics and making space for India’s minority groups. Given India’s multi-communal base, no government can afford to light a communal fire. Even if we were to imagine that Narendra Modi was innocent of the 2002 Gujarat carnage, he doesn’t have the natural advantage of a good image that the Congress party had, often unfairly. History haunts both negatively and positively. Although the post-Nehru Congress is responsible for a lot of communal mess, it managed to survive for a long time on its liberal image. The BJP under Modi does not enjoy such a persona. Despite its efforts to bring members of the Muslim elite on board, the bulk of Muslims and other minorities would be wary of a hawkish Hindu support base of the party and what it might mean for the minorities.
I recently had a chance to meet scion of an old Muslim Nawab family studying in an elite British university. With his eyes on the Congress party to provide him political space in future, his main argument was how Indian Muslims had become integrated with the idea of India. My concern was that, in fact, over years the integrated Muslim at the lower end had become less integrated. This Muslim may not want another Pakistan, since the latter does not appear to be in a shape to even protect itself, but is keener to create internal violent patronages to contest the state. I was also reminded of images of Indian Muslim visitors to Pakistan during the 1980s and the 1990s, who were quite comfortable with their image of India, than a number of Muslims that you come across today in India.
What is even sadder and almost at the scale of a tragedy is that this large community and its relations with its own government and state have become much more tightly linked with Delhi’s bilateral relations with Rawalpindi via Islamabad. Even if we argue that India’s Muslims shouldn’t be Pakistan’s concern, there is always the fear of Modi sarkar viewing these Muslims as Islamabad’s agents. The state’s military, intelligence and law-enforcement bureaucracy may also get tempted to point fingers.
Caught in the middle of such politics is an even more tragic character of Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, who has lost the opportunity to develop trade ties with India. He cannot even extend the visa of two Indian journalists, who as per an older unwritten arrangement, could stay and work in Islamabad for almost three years. Some of the GHQ’s journalist friends were quick to equate the non-extension of these visas with India denying visas to some Pakistanis, totally forgetting that this situation is entirely different. These journalists should not have been punished for Islamabad or Rawalpindi’s inefficiency in not sending Pakistani journalists to Delhi. Closing down these journalist positions in each other’s states will deprive both of understanding and talking to each other’s societies. Iron curtains have never brought peace or stability.
A critical fact worth comprehending is that both India and Pakistan are at a tricky stage of sociopolitical redefinition. While India prepares towards a more singular communal identity, Pakistan has turned into a hybrid-theocracy where various kinds of zealots have begun to define social, political and eventually foreign policy norms. A clash between the two is imminent. There are elements in Pakistan who have little problem turning the state North Korea-like as long as it can successfully challenge Modi’s dream of a new India. The intriguing part of this formula is that even such forces may piggyback on Modi’s image of a right-wing zealot. In case of a limited war or some kind of regional conflict, the responsibility would equally fall on the new Indian prime minister’s shoulders, mainly due to his reputation. Surely, the world will deal with him and even issue him visas, however, the international community may be equally curious to see if he proves them right in their discomfort about him as someone accused of involvement with violence within his own state.
There is a part of the Pakistani state keen to take the region forward and another that does not want to engage at all because its heart and mind tells it not to. This is a Pakistan that reads itself like a forever happening tragedy for which it holds the world outside responsible. This particular set of strategists is already feeling uncomfortable with Abdullah Abdullah in the north and Modi in the east. Some of the state’s precious ‘strategic assets’ have started with their propaganda against both.
Any increase in tension and violence will prove distracting to the new Indian leadership if it does not have its calculations right on how to deal with such an eventuality. Not that the new Indian prime minister would like the advise but he has far less space than his predecessor to prove that he is the right man for the right job.

Dipak@Rex Minor: You are really mixed up. Rebuilding Ram Temple does not bring any old glory back. It just satisfy people who have one of the oldest religious place back. What would happen if some one propose to build Ram temple over the Saudi Arabia Islamic place? That would be really stupid even for anyone in India. What we want Mr. Modi to do is to bring back India's old glory. India was place of peace, progress and prosperity and place of education when everyone wanted to come to India. That also included Alexander of Greece. He was stopped by Chandragupta Maurya. And his dynasty and subsequent dynasties those foreign travelers saw that glory and described to the world. Everybody wanted to reach India to share in those glory days. It's those glory days that we want to bring back. Why would anyone has to worry about new government bringing those glory days?
Dipak@Rex Minor: You guys are still mixed up. Rebuilding Ram Temple does not bring back India's old glory. What I meant was that the Modi government will bring back the old glory of India in teams of progress and prosperity. People from all over the world had heard of India and it's glory and all were trying to reach India and eventually they did. The current Congress Government has destroyed the country's economy with massive corruption and non-governance and broken the back of average people. We want Modi to change India and bring it back to the old glory. And that includes glory for all Indians of all religions. The fake Nehru-Gandhi dynasty was destroying India but the second independence of India comes OM May 26, 2014. and my personal hope is the peace, progress and prosperity of not just India but Pakistan also. My love for both India and Pakistan can not be diminished by you.
Dipak@Dr Priyanka: Those who voted for Modi and BJP are smart people who want to get rid of FAKE Nehru-Gandhi dynasty. Pappu(Rahul) was caught in 2001 at Boston airport with some $200,000 in undeclared cold cash when returning from a visit to a Columbia Drug Lord. It was BJP Prime Minister Vajpayee who called up the then President Bush to get Pappu released. I respectfully request the Doctor Saheba to understand that the days of Congress, their massive corruption and non-governance are thing of the past.
@Peshawar wala: YES SIR! you are the authority on history.....
but seriously, y so much hatred....u people act so religious...so y u no love people...y u hate em so much...n hate animals...n women? i mean cmon...think a lil beyond these manmade boundries......
Pakistan please solve your domestic issues, do not worry about muslims or christians or dalits in The great INDIA! We love our Indian brothers and sisters. Mind your own business...or lack thereof!
@Dipak: I do not believe that there is any person with common sense in the world, including those in Pakistan do not desire Mr Modi to succeed in resolving Indian domestic problems which the Congress dynasty could not.The author is one of the most talented intellectual that I have observed on ET and her thoughts are clearly outlined in the opening paragraph of the article. Do you have any problems with it? I have not seen Ram temple for thousands of year where Babri mosque was, but if Mr Modi does decide to act with insanity and as you said to bring back the glory of India, then you guys are in the twilight zone imagining about the glorious past..
Rex Minor
@Dipak: Invading Muslims? '..everybody wanted to come to India'...? India had glory? When? In a Bollywood movie? Which one? You are still suffering from the shameful embarrassment of 1000 years of Muslim rule. Still carrying a lot of emotional baggage. A lot. Last time anybody wanted to come to India was when they were still using bows and arrows and lances and were mounted on horses. Be thankful the Mongols kept going did not make a left turn. Only a minor chieftain, a Mongol descendant,..Babar, decided to come. Read dynasty.
E T go ahead. censure this.
Dipak@Rex Minor: We are talking about India and Pakistan, not other countries. The author blames Modi for being a Hindu in Hindustan. And what's wrong in re-building a Ram Temple where it existed for thousands of years. Modi and others are asking to build it within the framework of Indian Constitution. India has no desire to destroy other mosques as was done on temples by the invading Muslims. Modi is Modi a real practical man who wants to bring India to its old glory when everybody wanted to come to India. Nehru started the Muslim vote bank after independence without doing much for the Muslims. His dynasty used Muslims to stay in power and for the dynasty it was a crime to be a Hindu in Hindustan. No more. All Indian citizens are equal now. We just want Nehru-Gandhi fake dynasty to disappear forever.
@Dipak:
Did muslims also kill pagans, infidels and those who worshipped dieties in Mesopotamia and in Greece and other European countries and was Christopher Columbus a muslim who set sails for India but landed in Americas and massacred all those who did not convert to christianily.. Are History lessons not given in schools? It is realy pathetic.
Rex Minor
Dipak@Rex Minor: What a biased response. Muslim invaders attacked India to spread their newly found Islam religion. They always attacked thousands and thousands of Hindu temples and built masjids over or around the temples. Go and see for yourself. You will find them everywhere in India. The purpose of the destruction was to convert Hindus to Muslim by force as Mohammed had ordered his people and soldiers. Most Pakistanis are Hindu converts. A few were converted to Christianity by British or other Europeans priests and nuns. We Indians do not hate Muslims, just want to live in peace with people of all religions.
@Kasur wala: My dear friend you opinion about Supreme court of India is not based on facts had it been so there would not have been a Muslim Chief Justice and other Muslim judges in High courts and supreme court and you need not worry about 160 Million Muslims whom you already left and they are able to defend themselves. Will u tell me how many non Muslims are there in the Army,Police, Executive and other Govt services whereas the Indian Muslims are in every field equal opportunitiues. Four Presidents of India were Muslims .
@Dipak: Think logically, why did Babur emperor needed to make Babri mosque 'over' Ram Mandir, was there less space for making mosque back then even when 500 years ago there was less population of India what it is now. It is just a stupid arguement to malign Babur and Muslims and just advani brought that Ram mandir issues to do politics nothing else.
Congress has given the people shock after shock. Imagine India is the third richest country in the world and it was being stolen by any aira gaira belonging to the congress. I am devastated, because once I had threatened to lock up my ex-husband when I got a feeling that he was going to vote for BJP. He did not vote that day and kindly sat outside the poll booth while I like a queen went in and cast my vote for congress. And the same congress was taking India along the path of destruction. Those who have voted for Modi include a majority of majboor and poor people, mostly youngsters who are not religious but want a life.
Hey fellows,
According to GP65, Schedule cases( the name given by the Brits for the people classified as low caste in Hindu culture) is a neutral word!!
Rex Minor
@Dipak
To lie is a sin for a believer, but not for non-believers, you as aFollow hindu should know that. Now follow up on your thinking, all monuments including mosques during muslim rule were built on erased and abondoned hindu temples. You plan to follow up on this process versing it in the 21st century?
Rex Minor
Dipak@Rex Minor: what lies are talking about? Babri Masjid was built over Ram Temple by Babar. Subsequently Muslims of India abandoned that mosque almost hundred years ago. So recovering Ram Temple by Hindus of Hindustan is not wrong. Just think in correct manner.
few months back i left to comment on pakistani paper as on slaught on modi was high. every writer from pak blasted modi as if they are very liberal and pakistan is great in all kinds of freedom.Today Iam back becoz the author says indian muslims may not want another pakistan. The same idea that establishment of pakistan wants. Indian muslims first smart. they know getting seperate country will not serve any purpose.second they are cluster settled so never ever happens .even if it happens by that time pakistan would be 5 independent republic. but one good thing after reading all pakistani writers i worked for bjp with animal spirit. Thank you pakistan becoz the moment i hear your name i realize my religion and it reminds me my duty. God sent jinnah to wake up hindus. jinnah create pakistan to make hindus realize their religion and rashtriya. Again I am telling even after 1000 years of rule no one can vanish hindus. LONGLIVE pakistan becoz it reminds me i am a indian I have to work for my country and my religion.
@Jahangir Chauhan:
If Najam Sethi is the least credible man, then who is most credible??/ Zaid Hamid???
Strangely the history in Pakistan is different from any version of history outside Pakistan....Even the newspapers of West shows Pakistan as the aggressor not the defender during the 1965 war....
Now what??/ Cry conspiracy by the west to malign Pakistan way back in 1965 when Pakistan was allied with USA and India was a friend of USSR???? or just accept the simple fact that you have been moulded with lies right from the childhood by your history books and any truth which is different from that is a Hindu or Jewish conspiracy???
Narendra Modi’s position as India’s 15th prime minister
Madam Author, Please do not elevate Mr Modi to the status of the outgoing Economist Prime Minister; he is a suspected criminal chief Minister, associated with the murder of thousands and the destruction of the Babri mosque but judicialy not indicted.
Rex Minor
Very good article and very balanced analysis but we need to know few things: 1) in bilateral relations one can make more progress when you deal with extremist, since these are the people who will otherwise make hue and cries. 2) Majority (non fundamentalist hindus) Indian expectations from Modi is to revive economy, 3) Extremist hindus voted him for his known hatred for Muslims and his role in Gujrat riots. So number 1 is a good thing and one can hope for progress if Pakistan had a stronge PM. Second is a tough challenge since it is known fact all over the world (where Indian migrated - where they didnt) that Gujratis are good businessmen and thus may have contributed to Modi success in term of economics in Gujrat. To replicate such successes at greater level in India will be a challenge to Modi. If Modi sees himself failing he may resort to pleasing his base of extremist hindus, thus it will be a point where he may resort to creating troubles against Pakistan to divert attention.
@Kasur wala: 160 million Muslims in India? The last count was around 150 million equal to the then population of Pakistan! Now it must be several millions more! Boy, you guys reproduce fast!
@NaMo: Does we lack our capability to defend our land and territory just as Indian elected a fascist there answer is big NO.
@Polpot: Najam sethi is a least credible man among public but even among his fellow journalist. That guy is on the payrol of Indians so Indian often like to quote him.The next war will be between Indian Pakistan in next 5 years under the leadership of Narendra Modi of India as he got votes on such slogans
The article probably reflects majority of world opinion about us. There is very little to differ with the writer. But i would like to point out two important factor which cannot be ignored First is India's vastness and overwhelmingly secular culture. It is first time in the history of independent India that a party perceived to be not favorably disposed to a particular minority of the country has been overwhelmingly favored to lead the country. solely because of some mismanagement by grand old party having a place of pride in history of evolving Ind. Parties in all democracies change rolls because of change of popular percept. No harm.
But history has thrown open great challenge to BJP and they know it. This is second factor.
If they persist with their past and talk of majority dominance or t akedissent by minority as anti-national, then i can foresee their downfall as fast as their rise.
Common sense suggests, they know it and they will do all that is possible to strengthen a fecade of secular progressive and all inclusive party. But in the process they will antagonise Hindutava hardliner segment. But lure of power will propel them strongly to entrench new secular type governance. And hopefully that will be singular contribution coming out from 2014 elections and that is what we mean EVOLVING INDIA.
@Gul: "Boycott India." This brings to mind the bumper stickers that Pakistani carried at the time of its 1965 adventure against India; it said "Crush India". No need to remind you as to who crushed whom then. Has your itch returned? Good luck!
"...he has far less space than his predecessor to prove that he is the right man for the right job." What presumptuousness! He has to prove nothing; he has been issued a blank cheque by the people of India. There is no locus standii for any one outside that. So, butt out, lady!
"He doesn’t have the natural advantage of a good image that the Congress party had" Oh C'mon have you forgot the 1984 Anti-Sikh riots that took place under Congress Party, led by Rajiv Gandhi. Not a single hindu died in that riot, they were all Sikhs. No congress leader ever went to jail for that crime! Congress party is far more communal than BJP will ever be! BJP's mantra is simple "India First," its the congress that has been divinding India, and indians for decades in order to create vote bank for them.
Now, Modi should make sure that Pakistan treats its minorities right. Or India should follow Pakistan's example to integrate minority into its majority by converting them forcefully.
"Some of the GHQ’s journalist friends were quick to equate the non-extension of these visas with India denying visas to some Pakistanis" ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The journalist were kicked out because one of them conducted an interview with sardar Balouch the leader who led a walk across the country for missing persons in Baluchistan. The same sin as that of Hamid Gul. So its easy to surmise who issued the marching orders.
"In case of a limited war or regional conflict, responsibility would equally fall on the new Indian premier’s shoulders" ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Madam, Before attempting to lay the blame for a future war have u decided about who carries the credit for the three Indo Pak wars and Kargil? If you need to learn more pls view the videos of Mr Najam Sethi on Youtube.
Pakistan fear the reality of its existence. What it needs to fear is the fear of its own self. Shun this fear all will be okay.
Suprisingly his job is not difficult at all. On economic front UPA has done so badly that if he just doesn't repeat their mistakes, the growth will be revived. Just him becoming PM has changed the sentiments completely, now he just have to ensure that there are no wrong turns, which is not very difficult.
One the other front (Communal vs Secular) again thanks to UPA he doesn't have to prove much. The propaganda against him has created an image where muslims will be marginalised completely in his regime. All he has to do to negate this image is to make sure that there is no big communal clash in India, which again is not a very difficult task.
Probably he will be good for Pakistan too because once Pakistani realise that the economic growth matters more than these so called idealogical issues, they will also change their focus.
It is true that Modi has a myriad of challenges on his plates but he is also hard working, honest and eminently capable. Most of all, his management style relies on making institutions responsible rather than weakening them. All the babus from top to bottom are going to have a fire lit under them like never before.
Secondly, we should not automatically disdain the corporate sector. Large corporations are able to organize resources and capital to accomplish large scale projects such as infrastructure, oil exploration, pipelines etc. They create thousands of jobs and also indirectly benefit the growth of small and ancillary mom & pop businesses. Their shareholders are frequently the middle and salaried class who invest their savings in the stock market. So corporations are essential for an economy and I am surprised that you would automatically indict them as greedy. I hope that under Modi, Indian corporates benefit and grow rather than foreign ones.
Modi and all Indians are responsible for managing the affairs of their country. Indian Muslims are not seeking any comparisons to anyone. Certainly and categorically one can state that Pakistan is not any source of comfort or inspiration. Mr. Sharif and Pakistan can mind their own store - trade or not with India, without seeking parity where none exists. Not sure why all Pakistanis feel validated by looking at India.
The people of India got fed up with the utterly corrupt political parties, dividing the nation by playing Muslim vote bank politics, and allowing illegal infiltration of Muslims in large numbers, with total disregard to India's economic and security threats from these illegal aliens.
By voting Modi to power, the people of India have made a statement, in no uncertain terms, that they are proud of "Hindutva", a thousand year old heritage and tradition in India, when there were no Muslims or Christians in India.
The people of India are aware, that after decade long demonization vilification of Modi, the western powers and some regional countries are in deep discomfort in dealing with Modi as the leader of India. The people of India are also aware that there is a concerted global effort to thwart India's rise, by preventing emergence of any strong leadership in India.
The people of India wanted a change in the direction India was heading, under weak and corrupt leadership ... wanted a strong leader, who could protect India from the economic uncertainty, internal and external threats ... Modi fitted the bill perfectly ... !!
He really does not have to prove to Pakistanis that he us the right perdon for rhe job. If he continues with approach of justice for all and appeasement of none and deluvers growth and development, people will just be fine with him.
I find it fascinating that Pakustani libersls are more focused on ensuring a mild response from India to an act if terror rather than asking their own government to rein in the non-state actors.
The author has a bad habit of lazy writing tinged with academese. Consider this passage:
"This Muslim may not want another Pakistan, since the latter does not appear to be in a shape to even protect itself, but is keener to create internal violent patronages to contest the state. I was also reminded of images of Indian Muslim visitors to Pakistan during the 1980s and the 1990s, who were quite comfortable with their image of India, than a number of Muslims that you come across today in India."
Ayesha
I enjoyed reading your OPED. One thing for sure you are not a run of a mill stereotype Pakistani Journalist.
As I have had commented earlier, There are number of article on NaMO. It speaks a lot about average Pakistani Psyche about NaMO ,Petrified
To understand NaMO ,you have to understand culture of Gujrati community ,DO NOT FORGET FOUR PROMINENT GUJRATI ,Gandhi --Jinnah --Sardar --Morarji and many other from same community ,One thing is common for them ,all of them believed in non violence.
Gujrati community is by no means aggressive ,Except Business, Where you will not find any competitor against them on world stage.
So the Hype created by Deep State in Pakistan about NaMO is misplaced. NaMO's first and foremost mandate is to revive Indian economy and nothing else. Namo's first --Second --Third --fourth --Fifth and Last priority is and is ECONOMY.
I am wishing Pakistani a good night sleep ,But let us remember any more terror attack on Indian Soil from Pakistan and those five priority will change without an IOTA of doubt.
Boycott India.
Ananthamurthy said he wanted a supple nation, instead of a strong nation, because the latter can break like Germany and Japan.
Good article. But i'm sure he will keep himself neautral for long as he came by the forces who want to take revenge from Muslims as they ruled on them for centuries and now they want to make Ram Mandir on the site of Babri mosque so these kind of mentality and their leaders who got their votes on such basis will never like and want peace. As hatred is their vote bank and bread and butter and Modi is one among such.
Lot of words! Phorren words make it more difficult to communicate. Words are more gross than "intellectual thought." If that thought appears more in alien Angreji words then it is more away from the reality one perceives. Let us take word "communal." It originally was a good word. It simply meant people cared for each other for the well being of the community. So esteemed author's - "While India prepares towards a more singular communal identity, Pakistan has turned into a hybrid-theocracy where various kinds of zealots have begun to define social, political and eventually foreign policy norms." - is very confusing.
India's identity world over is its spirituality, its dharmikta. If that singular identity is removed then India is no longer India, it will be Pakistan, Afghanistan or Philippines. This Dharmikta at the base makes India peaceful, diversity embracing and progressive. Theocracy is alien to India, especially if it is based on alien book in alien tongue written for uncivilized people compared to Indians of that time. Kaalidas, a Classical Sanskrit writer, widely regarded as the greatest poet and dramatist in the Sanskrit language was born into Macaulay defined "untouchable" family. Shri. Narendra Modi was born in a utterly poor family, a tad above Macaulay defined "untouchable." Kaalidas, Chandragupt Mourya and Shivaji used to happen then and today NaMo happens. It is so called "communal" RSS and BJP had made it possible NaMo to rise and become PM of India. Pakistan is still making non resident Pakistanis, utterly rich feudals, peers and makhdooms as its PMs, governors and dictators. It seems India needs to be more "communal" Dharmik for equal opportunity and progress.
Coming back to "words." The emotional silence and tears convey much more. If I care for "my" mother then definitely I would care for you caring "your" mother as well. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1vtgflmodi-sheds-tear-says-bjp-my-mother-alsonews
