The committee formed to address the proposed Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) has drafted its recommendations in its third and final meeting on Friday, which is before the deadline of May 20, according a press release issued by the commissioner office.
While speaking to the media after the meeting, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation Administrator Rauf Akhtar Farooqui said that the report, that covers all aspects of the project, has been finalised four days before the deadline so that government can implement the project as soon as possible.
Karachi Urban Transport Corporation managing director Shamim Shirazi said that Japan International Cooperation Agency surveyed the project in 2009, 2013 and in the month of May this year to remove all hurdles and encroachments along the proposed route. He added that recommendations have been added in the report about clearing the route. Finance secretary Suhail Rajput also assured the media of early completion of the project.
According to Commissioner Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui, the height of the KCR station platforms will be equal to the level of a train platform so that children, elderly and handicapped people face no difficulty in entering the train.
The KCR will run on electric system that will enable around 600,000 commuters to travel daily on trains leaving every five minutes, he said. Moreover, he stated that both the federal and provincial governments have the completion of the project as their top priority.

this news is very eye opener for karachiites who were waiting for fast quick and efficiengt mass transport system since last 60 years. Really pray to Almighty this project kicks off and becomes functional in shortest possible time. Karachi can only survive with mass transit transportation, as the KCR project, regardless of the consequences. With policy guidelines by Transport Authorities for punitive toll charges/taxation for driving car/motor cycle during peak hours. The Driving License/Motor Vehicle License plate should be RFID tagged to be recognised remotely with the driver ID., CNIC, Owners name, and motor vehicle tax status. Dubai, Singapore already practrise this very successfully. Hence there's no need for any R&D., as it is successfully deployed and generic technology. Public transport as Metro buses are exempted from punitive tax in peak hours. Metro bus system should be on LPG instead of CNG, or diesel/petrol. LPG environment friendly, and good in performance, safe and not explosive. Transport sector under the respective regulatory body should be given tax immunity from Federal and Local taxes, VAT/Sales Tax and local tax should all be exempted from the transport sector.
