Renowned philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi attended a news conference on Saturday to dispel rumours of his death which had emerged on social media.
“I’m fine and living a normal life… there is no authenticity to all fake news running on social media,” he told reporters at the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT). He requested the public to “not pay any heed to such unfounded claims”.
Talking to The Express Tribune, Edhi Foundation spokesperson Anwar Kazmi said that messages claiming Edhi had passed away have been making rounds on Facebook and Twitter for the past two days. “We held a press briefing to condemn such false news,” he added.
“We denounce the propaganda by our conspirators who are spreading rumors about his [Edhi’s] death. He is an international figure. If something happens to him, God forbid, we will inform everyone and will not hide anything from the public.”
Kazmi said those who wanted to disrupt Edhi Foundation’s charity work were spreading such rumours. “Edhi Sb is doing well. He goes for dialysis twice a week and also attends his office.”
The spokesman also said that Edhi’s son Faisal was already handling most of the foundation’s affairs.
