JAMRUD:

A vehicle supplying goods to Nato troops stationed in Afghanistan was destroyed when it was torched by unidentified militants in Jamrud tehsil of Khyber Agency on Saturday.

The driver and cleaner were also physically assaulted by the armed men.

Political administration official Ali Sher said the incident took place around 11am when a Nato container escorted by levies and khasadar officials near Teddy Bazaar was attacked by militants travelling on four motorbikes.

Sher said around eight militants approached the vehicle and tried to kidnap the driver and cleaner and take away the vehicle, but khasadar and levies officials surrounded the container in Gudar, an off-road area leading to Bara.

The militants then torched the vehicle and whisked the driver and cleaner away.

The political administration official said khasadars subsequently launched a search operation in the area and found both the driver and cleaner lying severely injured in the bushes.

They were said to have been brutally beaten by the militants who managed to escape.

No loss of life was reported in the incident and further investigation is under way.

The number of attacks on Nato containers has increased since the cross-border supply was recently resumed.
