KARACHI: University of Cambridge has awarded scholarships to two students for their outstanding achievements in the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE).The scholarships are part of University of Cambridge 800th Anniversary Scholarships, launched in 2009.

The two students, chosen for the scholarships for 2014, are Shahzaib Ali of FFC Grammar School in Rahim Yar Khan and Muhammad Faaiz Taufiq of Karachi Grammar School. Ali has been offered a scholarship to study natural sciences at St John's College, Cambridge, while Taufiq has been offered a place to study mathematics at Peterhouse, Cambridge.

The scholarships are funded by the parent organisation of the CIE, the Cambridge Assessment. Under the programme, the two students will be invited to study at the University of Cambridge for their undergraduate studies. The scholarships provide full funding, covering fees and maintenance funds for the two students throughout their undergraduate programme.

"We are delighted to award our outstanding students with the 2014 Cambridge 800th Anniversary Scholarships," said CIE chief executive Michael O' Sullivan.

He was of the belief that getting into a university was only the first step while the real test was to develop skills that would make the candidate successful both professionally and as a person.

The two places offered by the University of Cambridge are conditional on the students achieving specific grades.

Raza is absolutely right. These students have done wonders, Alas, to go to a premier hub of learning is no small feat indeed. I myself believe that anyone who can go through these strenuous training camps for the Olympiads is either very lucky or superbly intelligent. We as a nation should spread awareness about competitions such as these because few people actually give the screening tests.

Just in case anyone's curious to what these students had in special that led them to this scholarship; well they both won laurels for Pakistan at the International Maths Olympiad held in Columbia 2013. These trips are fully funded for 4-6 best students in Pakistan in maths, chemistry, biology and physics olympiads. All u have to do is to pass a screening test called NSTC and you may be shortlisted with about 50 other students who will pass through a series of training camps until a final selection is made. Obviously the best and brightest students of Pakistan make it through to the final stage. I personally just wanted to pass on this information to people as I don't think many people in Pakistan know much about these competitions. While in other countries such as South Korea, USA, China the kids who take part in these competitions are well known and are even mini celebrities in their countries. In my opinion taking a medal at such a competition is a better achievement (or education) than breaking a world record with an abnormally large number of A's. Oh and I personally both of these students and they are full deserving of this award!
