ISLAMABAD: Due to a recent ban of Indian mangoes to EU countries, Pakistani mango exporters are presented with a unique opportunity to pounce and expand their business according to a press release by Harvest Trading Director and horticulture expert, Ahmad Jawad.

He added that while the EU-wide ban on mangoes from India has come into force, it may be lifted soon although imports to the UK are banned potentially until December 2015.

The ban was imposed due to the presence of Non-European food pests in 207 shipments of fruit and vegetables from India in 2013.

Jawad said it is the right time for Pakistani exporters to push their product into high value European markets so that mango lovers may not feel any shortfall, especially for EU where Pakistan has been awarded GSP plus status.

"However in our shipments," Jawad suggested "the government and its allied departments should impose strict monitoring of mangoes this year so that we may grab the EU and UK market in a better way."

He said permission may be granted to only those exporters who were prepared to comply with the set protocols for the EU.
