Pakistan finally gave a redeeming performance at the Junior Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Zone Boys U16 qualifiers as they defeated hosts Malaysia 2-1 in Kuching on Wednesday.
The team has already lost the chance to progress to the next round after succumbing to defeats in crucial matches against Chinese Taipei 3-0 and Hong Kong 3-0 earlier in the competition, thereby failing to remain atop Group B.
Although Mudassir Murtaza, Muhammad Zaid Mujahid and Muzammil Murtaza had a successful run at the pre-qualifiers, the team failed to emulate the same form in the qualifying round.
On Wednesday, Mujahid won the opening rubber of the tie as he defeated Sheikh Ahmad Sheikh Ameer 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 in two hours.
But Maylasia’s Koay Hao Sheng levelled the score 1-1 in the next singles rubber as Mudassir was beaten 6-1, 6-0.
However, Mudassir and Mujahid sealed the win for Pakistan in the doubles rubber after overcoming Sheng and Teng Alvin 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(7/5) in a gruelling match which lasted two hours 30 minutes.
Pakistan have finished third in the group with a solitary point to their credit after playing three matches. They will now play against Singapore on Thursday for the ninth place in the tournament.
Meanwhile, Chinese Taipei defeated Hong Kong 2-1 in their last group match on Wednesday. Both teams will now play in the Asia-Oceania Zone quarter-finals. Chinese Taipei will play Group D runners-up India and Hong Kong will face Australia.
