KARACHI: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is setting up an engineering college - the first by any municipal body in the country, The Express Tribune has learnt. The college will induct its first batch of students for the academic session starting from January 2015.

The under-construction building of the college in Korangi is expected to be completed within the next three months, revealed the KMC administrator, Rauf Akhtar Farooqui.

"The major impediment would have been acquiring affiliation with a prestigious educational institution," Farooqui told The Express Tribune. "We are fortunate to have the NED University of Engineering and Technology on board." He added that the college would be a gift from the KMC to the people of Korangi, Landhi and other adjoining areas.

In the first phase, the college will offer admissions to its four-year Bachelor's programmes in electronic engineering and information technology, followed by similar programmes in other disciplines, including civil engineering, in subsequent years, explained KMC education director, Muhammad Ehsan.

Meanwhile, a governing body, comprising the KMC administrator, public colleges' director-general, KMC education director, a sitting MNA and an industrialist, will also be formed to regulate its affairs.

The engineering college will be the second institution for higher education under the KMC, after the Karachi Medical and Dental College.

"This institution was the need of this area to encourage the youth towards engineering and technical education," said Farooqui. "The initiative will help reduce joblessness and pave the way for progress and prosperity in the areas."

Farooqui said that this would have never been achieved without the efforts and support of Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan and Muttahida Qaumi Movement's MNA Syed Asif Hasnain, who was elected from the area in the last general elections.
