ISLAMABAD: Former Planning Commission Working Group chairman on Hyrdropower and Alternate Energy Imtiaz Ali Qazilbash said that the country can add over 15,000 MW of hydropower in the next 5 years, 30,000 MW in 10 and 50,000 MW in 15, provided serious steps are taken for completion of hydel projects. He said this while addressing a seminar on “Sustainable Energy for All” organised by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI). The seminar was a discussion about the new initiative of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon of “Sustainable Energy for All”. This programme is to ensure universal access to modern energy services, improved efficiency and increased use of renewable sources. Qazilbash also proposed that Pakistan has identified projects for the huge potential of 60,000MW hydropower and over 53.61maf of water storage. “The initial investment on hydel projects can be up to $1.5 to $2.5 million per MW.”
