It was apparent before the first half of the day was over that the choice for the Delhi voter was between the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The Congress had been completely factored out, with perhaps only one seat where it could consider itself in the reckoning, or at least not staring at complete defeat.
But one major fact revealed itself in the Delhi elections, as indeed the polls in the other states that have taken place till now show. Despite the chest thumping and the drum beating, there does not seem to be a wave in favour of the BJP and its prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi. At least, not in this initial phase of voting. Delhi is a Congress and BJP city, with zero tolerance for other political parties. With the Congress out, the BJP was almost certain of generating a wave in its favour that would sweep through the seven parliamentary constituencies for a 7-0 victory. That might still happen but it is certain that the long-awaited Modi wave failed to happen. And the Delhi voter chose his or her candidate according to rational thought and not high voltage media propaganda.
As the elections near, there are indications of an opposition to the BJP in both Uttar Pradesh and Bihar as well. The consolidation that Modi had hoped for seems not to be taking place, although, of course, nothing is until it is in Indian elections. However, suffice it to say that the first murmurings that the polls are not stamped and sealed in favour of one party are being heard even in the usually deaf power corridors of Delhi.
Corruption is an issue and here the AAP and Arvind Kejriwal have managed to dent the BJP’s claim of being honest and above corruption. The rather strong campaign by Kejriwal that has made him the target of both the Congress and the BJP, was listened to by the common person and impacted on many who realised that his charge of collusion between Modi and industrialists Ambani and Adani did have some basis, more so as this was not denied at any stage by the BJP or by Modi himself. Besides the BJPs decision to include well-known corrupt faces in its list of candidates has not gone well for the party in states like Karnataka.
Reports do suggest that just as the AAP remained a factor in Delhi despite the media insistence that it was over, Mayawati and the Bahujan Samaj Party remain a factor in Uttar Pradesh (UP). She is steadily gaining ground and while the test will be in the polling, UP is unlikely to be a walkover for the BJP. It is a similar story in Bihar where the media has written off Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his Janata Dal (U) but from where field reports suggest that he remains a strong factor in these elections. He and Mayawati are both the butt of rumours that they will join the BJP after the elections and it remains to be seen to what extent they are able to overcome this negative propaganda.
Secular India is tense as the results of these elections will impact on all the ideals that the independence struggle led by Mahatma Gandhi and others stood for and sought to enshrine in the Indian Constitution. It is a tough election but the initial phases have demonstrated that the Indian voter is meeting the challenge head on and has not lost his or her mind in the process. It does seem that every parliamentary constituency will be keenly contested now, as the main worry was about the possibility of a wave for Modi in the north. The south, as always, is marching to its own tune and its own considerations. But a disgruntled BJP in UP and a strong opposition in Bihar to the BJP is changing the scales from dismal to fair for the non-BJP parties in the fray.

It is kind of surprising to see the arrogance of the so called secular folks, their taunting to say that you are secular only if you vote against BJP. We believe people like yourself equating Modi to Hitler, BJP to Taliban, getting excited when elected representatives send a letter to US Government requesting Modi not to be given Visa are the actual enemies of the Indian constitution. To suggest people like us are anti-constitution, anti-secular, anti-plural society, anti-minority is extremely rude on the part of the author. The secular India that a significant portion of people like me represents, is extremely comfortable with the prospect of Modi winning. Actually we would be very concerned if Congress comes back to Power, as it would send a wrong message to politicians that they can get away with anything.
Dipak@Hyderabad wala: you are confused. Not Amit Shah, but Azam Khan is facing murder charges. Amit is clean.
Dipak@Dr Priyanka: Doctor Bahenji, you are under disillusion about the later years of Indira Gandhi's life. Once she became the most corrupt person of India, she sent India in decline. After Sanjiv (yes Sanjiv, not Sanjay) died she prepared Rajiv and Sonia ( especially Sonia ) for corruption. The rest is a history. Billions of dollars stashed away in foreign countries, Sonia has already damaged Congress. The good thing is that brainless Rahul will demolish Congress forever. That is a great relief for India.
@Dipak: Dipak bhai Indira Gandhi was a very hardworking woman who sacrificed a lot for the country. I know an arab friend[can't name him] who visited her when she was PM. He could not believe what he saw. He was taken aback by her humble abode and her humility. This was a woman who took on the might of Nixon and Henry Kissinger. Only one person who came close to what she was, is Benazir. The later generation could not deliver what was expected of them. Feel sad for my congressi family who live in a cushy world of their own in India. They are in for a rude shock. Hum sab haalat ke maarein hain!
Dipak@Dr Priyanka: Sorry that your uncle had to go jail like my uncle during struggle of independence. The Congress party is no longer what Gandhiji and Sardar Patel believed in. the later years of Her life Indira Gandhi started corruption that Raji and Sonia advanced to point of no return. Conress is the most useless party in India that needs to be demolished for ever. Thank god Rahul will do that.
Dipak@Abhi: Ha Ha Ha
My comments are not published. I am disappointed with the moderator. This will discourage comments in future and slowly not reading ET, one of the esteemed paper in my eyes.
Dear Ms Mustafa Our family is an ardent supporter of congress. My uncle went to prison during independence and later he worked for congress. Now we shall wait for the results of the Delhi elections. Then we shall know whether what you are saying holds water or not. You said that there is no BJP wave in Delhi. Remember these words!
What an undemocratic and hateful debate where the results are already determined by the media and a few elites even before a single vote is counted! Is India turning like a hatefully polarized country from a secular democracy? A bit of magnanimity, humbleness and graciousness would be good for true democracy or am I asking the militant rightwing activists a lot?
People like the author can feel smug that Modi wave is not there. But, this assessment is all wrong and Modi Tsunami is amply clear. Pseudo-secular media, CONgress and a vast majority of Muslims, will not give credit to Modi and admit the Modi wave until there is a special button for Modi in each voting machine in the 2014 elections and a separate count is done for Modi votes.
It is like saying Srilanka won the world cup because all others did not play well !!! This means taking away the hard work done by the Captain and the team !!!! Amazing thinking. By the way AAPes have lost the plot after running away from the CM post of Delhi to grab the PM post so quickly.
MODs please publish my post as I feel author is not reflecting the mood prevailing in India.
BJP may get absolute majority and Modi may make the government, but believe me there is no Modi wave. Congress may get less than hundred seat but still people are supporting congress.
@ Indian Dude:
Have u ever studied the history of your country? Your history is much tanited as ours. Nehru's affair and the death of Gandhi ji at the hand of extremist are just of these instances, so be a sensible person first and nationalist afterwards....
Looks like the right hand man of Modi, Shah, [out on bail] may have some more cases filed against. For inciting hatred against Muslims. Currently this Shah is fighting murder charges.
@ IndianDude:
Before throwing dirt on others, look into your history pages as well. Everyone knows that Nehru was having an affair with whom and who killed Gandhi. Your history pages are filled with as much dark secrets as ours, so be a sensible person first and a nationalist afterwards.....
Hogwash! The reason why the Gandhis have launched a virulent personal attack on Modi in the last 2 days is because the first & second rounds have clearly indicated a consolidation behind BJP with a guaranteed decimation of Congress. In fact, the 125 year old ( as they love to remind us so often ) Congress has done something not even pretenders or parasites do, their latest online advt carries BJP's Atal Bihari Vajpayee's photo & a distorted quote to target Modi. Seema Mustafa, instead of working from your air conditioned house & crafting disingenuous reports to mislead readers from Pakistan, follow the lead of your illustrious friend Saba Naqvi (also an incorrigible Modi baiter) who is touring the alleys of Uttar Pradesh & at least reporting the ground realities accurately. Regrettably, there is no mechanism to hold reporters accountable & punishable for goofing around at work like sales people have else this lady would've been unemployed long back. ET, if you have paid for this article, you can account it under Donations & Charity whereas if it is a free write up ( more likely ), you should've put this under the Fiction section.
...Secular India is tense as the results of these elections will impact on all the ideals that the independence struggle led by Mahatma Gandhi and others stood for and sought to enshrine in the Indian Constitution...
How ironic that the author chose to present her opinion in an islamist state whose founder jeenah, unlike ghandhi and others, had not struggled a single day for independence of a state based on religion(so much so that even when he gave a public speech to his constituents who were mostly illiterates and knew no english, he spoke in queen's english)!
Seema,
Are you blind? There is Modi wave everywhere. Delhi is totally controlled by Modi. The Boy is making mistake after mistake. Smriti will get him. Even Kumar Bishwas will be OK.
Grasping at straws are we, Madam Secular?
Secular India is tense as the results of these elections will impact on all the ideals that the independence struggle led by Mahatma Gandhi and others stood for and sought to enshrine in the Indian Constitution.
Really? Why?
The most hilarious part is..You saying, BJP may win all 7 seats in delhi, but this is not due to Modi wave and people are smart and their choices are made by rational and logical thinking. You are absolutely right...so do you really think we cannot identify propaganda when we see one. We need an editorial...If i want to read propaganda, i can go through AAP's website...
mahatma gandhi fought for muslim appeasement not secularism. so it is good to get rid of muslim appeasement.
last time bjp won 31 seats whereas aap won 28 seats . with all their high hopes every one voted for kejri. now people after seeing kejris inefficency people will vote for bjp . then seemingly mustafa will loose her job even in pakistan news paper.
