A road accident between a police van, a bus and a rickshaw in Badin on Thursday claimed three lives and left 20 injured, including a DSP. The deceased comprise two police constables and a rickshaw driver.
The incident took place on the Dighri-Tando Ghulam Ali road. Witnesses told the police that the bus hit the police van as it veered to avoid hitting the rickshaw.
According to the Badin SSP, the police van belonged to the Maatli police station. It was heading towards the Nao Dunbalo area, where the DSP was to attend a public forum over the law and order situation in the region. The Nao Dunbalo town witnessed communal strife last month after the desecration of a Hindu temple.
The deceased were identified as van driver Ashraf Arain, constable Noor Muhammad Memon and rickshaw driver Daulat Bheel. Maatli town DSP Aftab Azeem, five other policemen and 14 passengers, including two children and four women, were among the injured. A three-year-old girl, Saghna Chetan, also lost one of her arms in the accident. Most of the injuries were caused as the bus overturned.
The DSP and constable Sikandar Lund were shifted to Hyderabad in critical condition. The incident’s FIR has yet to be lodged.
