KARACHI: Around 200 golfers will feature in the Sindh Golf Cup Tournament that begins today at the Karachi Golf Club (KGC).

The Sindh Golf Association (SGA) in association with the KGC is organising the three-day competition as part of its plan to promote the sport in the region. “A total of six events including amateur, seniors, veterans, ladies, juniors and masters categories would take place in the tournament,” KGC’s Vice-President Abdul Bari told a press conference yesterday.

He said the organisers have received 74 entries for the amateur event, 52 for senior, 33 for veteran and eight for the ladies event. “The amateur event would be competed over 36 holes while the rest of the events will be held over 18 holes,” said Bari.

Meanwhile, another former Pakistan batsman Basit Ali believed that there are some players who cannot change their style and Afridi is one of them. “He has been playing like that since the start and he won’t change his style,” said Ali, referring to Afridi’s flamboyant nature that has resulted in his dismissals at crucial junctures in the match for a long time.

“But Pakistan desperately need a batting plan before playing against any side, be it Zimbabwe or South Africa. We need a professional batting consultant who can provide clear planning” said Ali. “We have one of the finest players but our lack of planning results in our downfall.”

Six of Pakistan’s seven lowest Twenty20 totals have come this year alone including being bowled out for 89 against England.

Former chief selector Abdul Qadir said, “Why are there two bowling coaches? It’s our batting that’s been struggling since the last year.

“Even an ordinary person can see that our batsmen are faring badly against all the oppositions.”
