“I don’t understand why the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) does not recognise a basic need - to have a full-time batting coach with the team,” Zaheer Abbas told The Express Tribune.
“Situation won’t change itself because poor batting has been our problem for the last decade but I don’t comprehend why the issue is being taken lightly,” said the former captain.
Abbas also singled out Shahid Afridi for an irresponsible display as captain. “I think the way Afridi played is a concern for the team,” said Abbas.
“He’s an irresponsible player and captain and he should start thinking about his own performance instead of citing others in the side.”
Meanwhile, another former Pakistan batsman Basit Ali believed that there are some players who cannot change their style and Afridi is one of them. “He has been playing like that since the start and he won’t change his style,” said Ali, referring to Afridi’s flamboyant nature that has resulted in his dismissals at crucial junctures in the match for a long time.
“But Pakistan desperately need a batting plan before playing against any side, be it Zimbabwe or South Africa. We need a professional batting consultant who can provide clear planning” said Ali. “We have one of the finest players but our lack of planning results in our downfall.”
Six of Pakistan’s seven lowest Twenty20 totals have come this year alone including being bowled out for 89 against England.
Former chief selector Abdul Qadir said, “Why are there two bowling coaches? It’s our batting that’s been struggling since the last year.
“Even an ordinary person can see that our batsmen are faring badly against all the oppositions.”
