The 10-point index, which ranks each country by its level of religious diversity, is divided into four ranges, “very high”, “high”, “moderate”, and “low”. Pakistan ranked among the 136 “low diversity” countries, the largest range on the index indicating that most countries in the world are not religion diverse.
The 12-nation top range of “very high” diversity countries comprised of six from Asia-Pacific – Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam, South Korea, China, and Hong Kong – and five from sub-Saharan Africa – Mozambique, Benin, Ivory Coast, Guinea-Bissau, and Togo.
Of the 232 countries in the study, Singapore with a population of more than 5 million had the highest score on the Religious Diversity Index. About a third of Singapore’s population is Buddhist (34%), while 18% are Christian, 16% are religiously unaffiliated, 14% are Muslim, 5% are Hindu and less than 1% are Jewish.
According to the data, Pakistan had the 23rd largest proportional Muslim population at 96.4%, smaller than immediate neighbours Afghanistan and Iran, but larger than Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia.
Pakistan had a Religious Diversity Index score of 0.8 ranking 185 out of 232 countries included in the study. It featured an overwhelming Muslim population of 96.4%. Hindus constituted largest religious minority with 1.9% of the population with Christians a close second comprising 1.6% of the population. Buddhists, Jews, and those belonging to 'folk religions' all comprised 0.1% of the population each.
Among Muslim majority nations, Pakistan ranked 26th in terms of religious diversity, with Malaysia topping the list and Morocco being the least diverse. Interestingly, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia are more diverse than Pakistan, and so are all Arabian Gulf countries, except Yemen. Turkey and immediate neighbours Afghanistan and Iran ranked lower than Pakistan in religious diversity.
Interestingly, the United States and the United Kingdom did not rank very high on the overall index with both countries falling in the “moderate” diversity range, below “high” diversity countries like North Korea, Bahrain, Qatar and Cuba. Australia and Canada also ranked within the “high” diversity range.
Czech Republic, North Korea, Estonia, Japan, Hong Kong, and China topped the list of proportional population that was “religiously unaffiliated”, those who say they are atheists, agnostics or nothing in particular.
The Pew Research Center, a research group that does empirical social science research, developed the Religious Diversity Index which looks at the percentage of each country’s population that belongs to eight major religious groups – Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism. The closer a country comes to having equal shares of the eight groups, the higher its score on the index.

Singapore is the most religiously diverse country in the world NOT China. For goodness sake. Singapore is not in China.
@KAlam
As opposed to Christianity and Hinduism?!
@Kashif
Living in bubble are we? No point telling you the statistic, but if you want to be one of those people who like to know the truth of the world please google the demographics of India
@Freaked out: Well, when my aunt's parents where threatened with a note saying that they had to leave their house or acid would be thrown on their faces, and many of my friends, family, and friend's family, is threatened, killed, tortured or otherwise because we are Ahmadi Muslims, it does not make one cry out of love for Pakistan.
Pak muslims need to bow towards a re-aligned qibla. Not the Shah Waliullah, Syed Ahmed Barelvi and Maududi inspired Islam whose main goals are political (global caliphate) and who actively promote intolerance of other faiths. Not the ghaas eating yet nuclear bomb making narrative of Pak army either. But the syncretic and tolerant teachings of mystics like Baba Farid, Nizamuddin Auliya, Moinuddin Chishti, Shah Hussain, Bulleh Shah, Mian Muhammad Baksh, Sultan Bahu and Khwaja Ghulam Fareed. In the modern context of globalism and multiculturalism where political goals like a sharia inspired global caliphate are pipe dreams and impossible to achieve, its time to shed this ideology and return to the true tolerant roots of Indian Islam.
I'm a Pakistani Canadian Atheist.
The report presents statistics based on actual figures but makes absolutely no remark regarding the good or bad, right or wrong. Just figures. However some people getting offended, calling it bashing or simply declaring the report a sham reflects something is actually wrong. While another minority sentenced to death for an sms while houses of his sect burn.
@ Saira
What theme?
@Land of Pure:
"It was once we had 22% Hindus"
Once there were 100% Hindus in the Sub-Continent. Then it became 60% Buddhist majority (now vanished) region. Also once there were 0.0% Muslims, Christians, and Sikhs, and now there are many. So, whats your point. Where those 22% Hindus (actually much less than that) gone?
@ovais "Pakistan is most diverse Muslim nation in terms of sects,yes muslim is one religion but we have different sects so we are most diverse"
So does Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism etc. All are single religion, but have numerous sects within it. In fact more diverse sects than that found in others, yet these countries fares well because of various sects as well as diverse religions.
@landhi walla Saudi is more diverse because it has numerous sects and diverse foreign expats immigrants. Same is the case with other Muslim countries doing well..
// after partition there were 25+% non-Muslims in west Pakistan. Now they amount to 3%!! Why? //
I love this percentage argument. Obviously someone failed at 5th grade mathematics. If there are 200 people living in a place, 100 from religion A, 100 from religion B, (50-50%) and rate of growth for religion B people is higher, after few years for example there could be 150 Religion A people and 450 Religion B people. (25-75%). Drop in percentage for one religion. That does not mean anyone from religion A was killed.
But obviously nothing taking away from your argument that minorities are prosecuted on daily basis in Pakistan. But please get your MATH straight !
In 1951, Hindus constituted 22% of the Pakistani population (this includes East Pakistan, modern day Bangladesh);[4][5] today, the share of Hindus is down to 1.7% in Pakistan, and 9.2% in Bangladesh. (In 1951, Bangladesh alone had a 22% Hindu population.
Pakistan's lack of diversity (and no I don't mean in the sense of folk dances and colorful traditional dresses) makes it such a mind-numbingly boring place. You talk to ten people and you wont get an original thought between them, it's all variations on a (rather narrow) theme. Afterwards, you'll most probably feel like you have been talking to the same person all the time.
this seems little away from realities as the part of Pakistan where i belong and work and if see around i am not able to believe in this report...in the city of Abbottabad there are about 4 churches of different Christian sects, every weekend i travel and observe Sikhs doing their rituals at Panga sab hassabdal, we have parsis here , we have hindus here...i don't what these Pew type organizations wanted to find in Pakistan...we are living peacefully since an ages but seems since Big player finds their interest in the region things started going in the mess...please go away from Pakistan we dont need your support
The darkly funny thing is : Pakistan in 1947 was one of the most diverse Nations on Earth!
Slowly but surely, the Hindus and Sikhs were scarred away or were forced to convert. A Hindu boy converting on TV is a thing in Pakistan. Its Entertainment!
A Hindu Girl kidnapped and forcefully converting her is barely noticed.
No wonder the Hindus and Sikhs have either run away or converted or downright killed, like it happened recently.
Now, once all this cleansing is done, the force of hatred will be so strong that the Muslims themselves will be the next targets.
Its already happening : First, it was Ahmadis, now its the turn of the Shias.
In time, even the numbers of Shias will decrease, as anyone who occupies the largest minority position will be hunted down. The ideology of Pakistan at work.. It'll never stop.
Pakistan is the most diverse muslim nation in terms of sects , Yes muslim is one religion but one needs to understand the different sects we have.
Only One Religion in Pakistan ++++++++++++++++ Yet Pakistanis lead what must be one of the least secure lives in any country in the world!
@asif: Religious diverse, unless u think the sects follow different religions
Good Job ET !! KEEP IT UP !! Demonizing and Demeaning Pakistan :-(
Yawn. Yawn. Pakistan's favorite sport is cricket but ET favorite sport is Paki-bashing. What is new.
I am little surprised that 'India'. has not been mentioned in this article. After all, India is the most diverse country on the human planet. It is home to all the religion including 3rd largest muslim population in the world. And of course not to forget it is home to at least 100 languages (though indian constitution only recognizes 22 or 23 languages only).
Any sikhs, hindus, parsi, jains or ahmadis in china? What a load of crap!
What rubbish! china is the most diverse country in the world? Who conducted this study, chinese communist party?
The limitation of this research is that they are considering Muslims as a single entity, rather there are more than 70 sects amongst Muslims and they all are different with each other.
Somewhat ridiculous. Saudia more diverse than this country. Us less diverse than North Korea.
Does one need a study to know that?
From the 3.6% non-muslim population of Islamic Pakistan, how many are languishing in prisons because of Blasphemy accusations, how many abducted because of easy ransom, how many forcibly converted and how often their sacred places damaged?
We should all wish and try that Pakistan would be more multicultural and multireligious country, a model society for human tolerance and dignity.
Point to ponder. Pakistan is less diverse than Saudi Arabia and Middle East, why? Simple. Because these countries are exporting religious intolerance to Pakistan and for themselves they believe to live peacefully in religious harmony. Double standards?
Sham report!
How is India in moderate group with 90% of hindu population ? Oh wait, probably because of several cults and myths in Hinduism that make them diverse ! Haaaaa. There is something seriously wrong with this data. USA is probably the most diverse country in the world.
Blaspheny and religious persecution of ethnic minoritys will have the affect on a county. WW
Pakistan is the birth place of Sikh religion.Sad fact that it has virtually no Sikhs!
@desi:
"Big deal. there are 136 countries out of 196 that are also in least diverse catagory. Go find some other stat to low ball Pakistan!"
You need to think a little deeper before making this comment. Yes, there are other countries that are less diverse. But, the devil is in the detail. In Pakistan's case, after partition there were 25+% non-Muslims in west Pakistan. Now they amount to 3%!! Why? What happened to all those non-Muslims? Religious persecution?
In the case of most other countries, they might have been traditionally a homogeneous group and haven't changed much. They did not persecute other religious minorities.
Pakistan will be one of the most diverse in science ...:p .. One day there will be Zero diversity in religion, Only Wahibi sect will rule.
Tribune Express: Any point in printing this stuff. Trying to glamourise those who have less muslim population> Should we not be proud that there are most muslims here , as it should be elsewhere. What is your agenda? come clean or wait to be cleaned.
Are secularoon and liberaloons again in heat?
This means nothing. What about the sects within religions? Muslims for example cannot be classed as a single entity.
It was once we had 22% Hindus even in 1951 but we made it purer by perhaps biggest silent massacre of all time
Wrong Title and unnecessary reporting!
Is that the object you guys? Congratulations!
Big deal. there are 136 countries out of 196 that are also in least diverse catagory. Go find some other stat to low ball Pakistan!
The USA is less religiously diverse than Canada, China and Germany? Obviously something's wrong with the calculation methods here
