KARACHI: Karachi United will head for Liverpool next month as they won the 2014 Road to Anfield football event after defeating an Islamabad outfit in the final played in Karachi on Tuesday.

The Standard Chartered Bank (SCB), sponsors of Liverpool FC, organised the event to give an opportunity to a local football outfit to perform at Anfield, home of the famous football club Liverpool.

A total of 29 teams took part in the tournament with Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad advancing to the final stage. After the last-three phase, Karachi United and Islamabad progressed to the final.

The final was an absorbing battle despite the fact that no goals were scored till the final whistle. Both teams, comprising seven players each, displayed a miraculous show of attack and defense.

With the epic encounter entering penalty shoot-outs, Karachi United appeared as the ultimate winners after overcoming their opponents 3-2.

As per the plan, Karachi United will now represent Pakistan in the Global Standard Chartered Trophy tournament in Liverpool next month.

The event will see 13 teams in action from various countries of Asia, Africa and the Middle East region as the event kicks-off on May 13 at Anfield.

Apart from that, Karachi United will also get the opportunity with other competing teams to attend an English Premier League match at Anfield and will receive a professional training session from Liverpool FC legends and coaches.
