Crackdown on crime: Two dozen suspects nabbed by law enforcers

A private ‘beater’ of the police among these arrested.

KARACHI: Over two dozen suspects, including alleged target killers, were apprehended by the law enforcement agencies during various raids in the city on Friday.

District East police claimed to have apprehended seven suspects allegedly involved in various cases of crime. A private ‘beater’ (enforcer) of the police, Liaquat Ali, who was also among the arrested men, confessed that he and his three accomplices - Zafar, Rahat Ali and Abdul Sattar - used to collect extortion money from pushcart owners and bachat bazaar vendors for police officials.

The accused head constable, Rahat Ali, is posted in Mirpurkhas district and Zafar is posted at Sharae Faisal police station. They have yet to be arrested. District East SSP Pir Mohammad Shah said that five other suspects, Ghulam Mustafa, Muharram Ali, Ali Raza, Sarfaraz and Mohammad Raheel, were also apprehended in different raids. The men would snatch money from people leaving banks after withdrawing cash, he added.

Separately, district West police apprehended seven alleged target killers. The arrested suspects were identified as Arif aka Matha, Hanif aka Pachpan, Javed, Nabeer aka Noman, Afroze Alam, Arif Khan and Yasir. They were arrested during raids in New Karachi, Khawaja Ajmer Nagri, Nazimabad, Pirabad, Saeedabad and Sir Syed police station remits. Their arrests were disclosed during a press conference held by DIG West Javed Odho at his office. At least 10 suspects allegedly involved in lifting vehicles and other street crimes were also arrested in raids.
