KARACHI:

Approximately 30 blood banks will be centralised soon in Sindh, announced the Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority (SBTA) secretary Dr Zahid Ansari on Friday.

Dr Ansari said that the decision was taken during recent meetings with representatives of blood banks held at the SBTA office. He revealed that the authority, after consulting these representatives, has devised a mechanism to centralise blood banks in the province and claimed that this system will be enforced within a month. According to the secretary, each centralised bank will be linked to six smaller banks under the new policy, with each central bank being assigned clear responsibilities and jurisdictions.

“The SBTA has been working to introduce centralised blood banks in the province for a long time,” said Dr Ansari. “The aim is to improve the performance of blood banks and their two main responsibilities will be to store and supply blood.”

Dr Ansari added that the organisation has carried out a successful crackdown against unauthorised blood banks that were running on a commercial basis and were supplying unsafe blood to poor patients across the province. A total of 20 blood banks have been closed across the province in 2014, according to the SBTA secretary.

Dr Ansari revealed that it was also decided during the meetings to have external quality assurance in order to ensure quality and maintain a high standard of blood transfusion. He also directed the heads of all blood banks in the province to submit a performance report every month to the SBTA office.
