Six polio cases surface in a single day

Six more polio cases, including four from North Waziristan Agency (NWA) and one each from Peshawar and Bannu, surfaced on Thursday.


The National Institute of Health (NIH) Islamabad has confirmed the cases.

The NIH informed that polio virus wild type1 were diagnosed in 17-month-old Zahid Rehman and 16-month-old Muhammad Rahim from Miramshah tehsil of NWA.

Similarly, seven-month old Sidra and 16-month-old Said Rehman from Mira Ali were diagnosed with the crippling disease. All of these children had not received a single dose of polio vaccine.

A ban against polio drops was issued by Hafiz Gulbahadur in NWA and the Mulla Nazir group of South Waziristan in 2012. NIH confirmed poliovirus attack on 22-month old Shahzeb from Bostanabad-II area of Peshawar. The child had received immunisation drops, a health official said.

He further said that with the emergence of this case, total cases in Peshawar have reached three.

From Bannu, 18-month old Aqsa fell victim to the poliovirus. The official said that the victim was given polio drops twice only while her parents refused to immunise her against the disease later.

The official further said that with the appearance of recent cases in Bannu total cases have gone up to two in the district. He said total number of polio victims have increased to five in K-P.

With four new cases, the total number of cases from Fata reached 29, of which 26 are from NWA (Miramshah 17, Mir Ali 9) and one from South Waziristan Agency.

Drive suspended

An anti-polio campaign that was to be launched on March 20 in Khyber Agency was once again suspended with the political administration and health department citing security reasons.
